I watched "Music Box : Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary" Last night. It was entertaining, and had some good studio shots from the 70's and
live show footage from back then. MD 441 on full display oh yes. It did get a little political though. Wish they would have avoided that.

I think the term Yacht Rock is mildly insulting, and rather inaccurate.

I beg to differ. I've grown up primarily near the harbour in Sydney, and encountered a lot of yacht rockin'.
It's pretty damn accurate for the kind of music the kind of people who sail in yachts listen to, both musically, aesthetically, and... erm... mentally.
Not that there's anything wrong with it - I like some of this stuff and have the documentary all set to watch this evening.

I'm pretty confident that the vast, vast majority of people that enjoyed this music never got anywhere near a yacht.

Yup. Watched it few days ago. Good doc. I still can't get my head around calling that music yacht rock. I guess you need to be born in the 90s to call it that.

nope. i was a goth in the 90s. didnt even own a fishing boat and had no desire to. i was too busy dancing like a bat.

The doc was good and fun to watch. My only issue with it was the part about how they claim black artists such as Pointer Sisters or James Ingram were trying to be yacht rock to get a bigger audience. I don't buy that. I don't think Richard Perry making records with the Points Sisters gave two hoots what Ted Templeman was doing with the Doobie brothers. They made their own records and tried to sound hip and tried to make the best records they could make. They may have even outdid the originals in some cases. For obvious reasons, they were better singers.

Judging from the end, Donald Fagan does not like the term "Yacht Rock" either.

Till this thread I'd never heard the term; now I find out the Music Choice channel on Comcast has an entire category called Yacht Rock.

Apparently we have J. D. Ryznar to thank for this silly appellation, which he coined in 2005 in his online video series. "..understood as a pejorative term..." (I guess "Soft Rock" wasn't pejorative enough) ... "..saccharine sincerity", indeed.

How much crossover is there between yacht rock and what I would call "fern bar rock"? Groups in that category would include Firefall, Ambrosia, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Gerry Rafferty, Seals and Crofts, etc.

“Baker Street” and that one Ambrosia song are yacht rock classics. Nothing sounds better on a yacht than the Baker Street sax and those dreams of buying some land and those yacht-ish aspirations of giving up the booze and the one night stands, settling down in some quiet little town and forgetting about everything.

I am not that familiar with their music, but I did hear that Seals and Crofts were a bit like the Dan. Perfectionists in studio.

Perfectionists to the point where when I saw them in concert in Santa Barbara about 1978 they came out on stage, sat on their stools, and put on headphones. Worst concert ever - no real connection to the audience, as if they were in a studio cutting a record.

I prefer Type O Negative's version of "Summer Breeze" to the original by quite a bit. And when I saw them play, you'd better believe there was no stool-sitting. (And Peter Steele ripped all the strings off his bass at the end of the concert, as was his habit...)
