I'm looking for a good guitar for R&B/neosoul. After hearing the guitar in this video, I'm hooked on the sound of this G&L Legacy. I can't tell if its a USA model or the Tribute. Compared to other lower end strats I've heard, this one has a very warm rich sound. In some places it almost sounds acoustic. I'm guessing this is a USA model because of the "vintage" tones I hear. I want the USA G&L Legacy but only have a budget of about $400. I know they have the Tribute series, but I wouldn't want to compromise sound quality if I don't have too. Is there anything else in my price range that would get me this kind of sound? I don't think a Squire or MIM strat would do it.
I can't help you, but I would like to hear some people's opinion on this... I'm looking to get a guitar in that price range too, so any help would be cool
I can't see from the vid if it's a tribute series or not. They have a little tribute sign on the headstock. G&L Tribute Series are very good. I got a tele about five or six years ago. They have exactly the same pup's as the big daddy G&L's. I understand they are made in Korea, then shipped back to factory in the States for final fettling, setup and whatever. I also have a Fender American DeLuxe HSS Strat and Musicman Luke and the G&L fits right in. I put some Grover lockers on it. Very solid guitar, great value.
After much research and playing alot of different guitars, I ended up with one I would have just walked past - a Godin Freeway Classic. This guitar has LOTS of warm tone and actually sounded just as good (if not better in some cases) than the G&L Legacy. Try that one out if you can. The price was right too.

The Godin Freeway Classic is definitely a great option for what you are trying to achieve. If you want to spend a bit more money, I will say that I have been really impressed with the PRS Se series (they are made in Korea). Nonetheless, the sound is awesome, in fact I preferred it over my USA Strat and couple of Gibsons I have tried too. I just love playing with a Set Neck.

Which PRS Se do you have? There are many different kinds. Trying to find one with a similar vibe as the track in the video posted.
I personally use a tele, but there are a LOT of options for a nice clean tone that works in R&B. It is almost limitless to be honest. A lot of it depends on your skills and then the string gauge. I like to use 10s to get that thicker sound.
G&L guitars and basses are awesome. Some of my all time favorites. But you could make do with a Les Paul style guitar. For me, I get that warmth with my tele on the neck pickup.
