I've created an aggregate device on my Mac Mini M1 consisting of a Presonus 24c and an HX Stomp. Both are at 48hz, and the session is also 48hz. I get constant spinning beach balls of doom on Studio One 6 when trying to use it with the aggregate device selected. These same devices work with no issue at all in Pro Tools.

I've read some posts on the web with people talking about the same thing, but I suppose not a lot of people use aggregate devices, so it's not talked about much. Anyone else notice this, and is this fixed/improved in Studio One 7?

Studio One has been known to be more sensitive or less stable when dealing with aggregate audio devices on macOS.

So no end in sight on this I suppose? I also emailed Presonus support to see what they have to say on it.

Fortunately, at least for the moment, I'm preferring Pro Tools, but now and then I like to use Studio One. Been switching back and forth between the two for years. I always keep both installed. But I'm moved, I think, permanently to using Aggregate because of the insane flexibility I get out of it, so I suppose I'm gonna be seeing a lot more of Pro Tools in future unless Studio One gets a handle on this. I'm assuming it's not a priority for them since it's been an issue and remains so.

Yeah, you are right. Studio One has long had this weird edge case with aggregate devices, and you're right—there’s no official roadmap or commitment from PreSonus suggesting it’s a priority. Your setup makes perfect sense—using Aggregate for combining the Presonus 24c and HX Stomp is a good way to gain flexibility without constant plugging and unplugging

Presonus got back to me and confirmed that the only devices that work aggregate with Studio One are Quantum Thunderbolt.

I’m actually now combining the 24c, HX Stomp XL, and Roland Juno-D8 synth via aggregate. And just ordered an SSL 12 so I’ll be swapping out the 24c with the SSL. Never done this before but amazing that I can keep my analog inputs free and get all my guitar and key/synth stuff pumped in digitally without needlessly hitting more DA/AD on the way in.
