I have copied the basic curve from the new P821 tape with my go to eq for fine adjustments.
I put it after the 280 pre and mix the curve in using the gain scale.
I have also copied the curve and made it M/S for stereo channels. The great thing with M/S is that you keep the focus in the low low’s and make small or big adjustments.
Oooooouuf what colors.
What a super cool color this masterpiece has.

How are you all utilizing this? On what instruments? In what contexts? I'm demoing it, but it's not clicking for me yet at all.

How did you copy the curve ?
I noticed that plugin doctor does not work correctly with this plugin. If you used that, you may not have the correct curve.
also should note that the frequency response of p821 is dynamic so it changes with input level. Linear analysis will not show this, it only shows the "base" curve (before dynamic behavior kicks in) (*this may be all that you are after, the "boxtone").

Anything I want a slightly grungy preamp on.

I've not found a use for it set to destroy yet, but I have enjoyed it on vocals, acoustic guitar, harp, vibraphone... anything that I want to add a little hair to, in order to make them stand out a bit more in the mix.

Anyone using a tape emulation post/pre this?

The great thing about creating a curve is that you can make it sound the way you want and adjust everything to your liking and taste. But the basic curve itself from what you imitate is the starting point. On the 280 Pre you have something called Drift so the tolerances are already in the material. I think it sounds good and even better. Imagine that you add eq points that also lift L and R separately…. Now imagine that you have gone beyond the basic curve you have borrowed and created something of your own and very unique.

I tried to resist this one but I couldn’t. It breaks up in a really interesting way that worked so perfect on this vocal I was mixing this week. I was really going for a late 70s Cure/Joy Division type vibe and it just got me there right away, so out came the wallet. Nice one Mixland!

I can see 280 working well. Upper mid sheen that isn't too slick or glossy, it has grit and coarseness too.
Curious what you used for time based FX? I like Quantum Room Sim and/or Ursa Major (or any wonky multi-tap delay) for this aesthetic. Or Verti-Verb with pitch drifting, short repeats.

My all time fav in the box reverb for a prominent retro reverb is Rare Signals Transatlantic Plate, on the echo plate setting. I also use Taped Spaces a lot. And for echo I love Wavesfactory Echo Cat

Compared this against the hardware and it’s not close fwiw.
