On a real Pultec, as you set the bandwidth more narrow, the boost increases in gain. This is part of the design. Evidently, the programmers added this idiosyncrasy to the cut, as well.

On this one the boosts stays the same regardless of the Q. More analyzer p0rn attached with high/mid/low Q values with the same amount of gain.

This is a fun EQ to play as long as keep my shift key pressed!

Yes, I had to keep my shift key to dial it finely in. Especially near the bottom of the ranges. Trying to get into the bass frequencies with the bell was a little tricky.

Yeah, if the developer can hammer out a few of the requests to make it easier to use, it could definitely be a super great EQ. IE numerical readout of the exact numbers on the dials, making the filter knob easier to use somehow, etc. But the requests are definitely not necessary as its a freebie.

Just one thing I'm noticing, I'm having a lot of trouble with the precision of the frequency controls, mainly in the bottom range of each knob. It seems as though the scaling is slightly off, making them ultra sensitive to the slightest movement. This is especially evident at lower values. For example with the HPF, dialing in values below 100Hz with any precision at all is nigh on impossible. Perhaps the frequency controls could benefit from a smoother logarithmic scale?

Update: Got on the computer and tested it, and the update indeed solved the problems. Now -20 is actually -20 and the "HPF by default" is gone. HPF is still tricky and you barely touch and it's already cutting very high, more than the knob position might suggest. Reminds me to...use my ears. heh

Never compared the 2 directly to be honest, the EQV2 "softran" reminds me of a soft clipper, shaves the transients in a nice way, you can use it in conjunction with the input knob to add harmonics and tame dynamics at the same time.

The "softran" setting in EQV2 was added to tame transients which are accentuated when boosting high frequencies, at higher drive levels. It's very much program dependent, and comes in handy on things like high hats, percussion or acoustic guitar. SATV uses totally different saturation/limiting algorithms.

I'm going to buy CP2V in a few days and would love to have EQ3V in AAX 64bits soon, because I have been using its demo wrapped with patchwork and I really like that eq.

I like the free EQ, only thing that I find a bit hard to deal with is the high pass filter knob. If you get some time Gary, you should check out Kush's Electra plugin.. He has dual concentric knobs on that GUI but implements the click area differently. Basically, everything around the knob itself is part of the region you can click to grab that outer knob.. I feel like something along those lines could be useful for EQ1A. Just extending the clickable area out past the outer knob to the edges of the box that define the square on the GUI.

For instance, everything in the highlighted box could be a click area for the outer ring.

It's official. Version 2.8 will be available soon. There is some more info on developer's website. It's going to be so much easier to use with frequency/gain display. Best of all - still free.
It's not just EQ1A that has a new look. All Mellowmuse plugin GUIs have been refreshed.

At last, I have two of his plugins and they sound great but they are a bit buggy with Studio One, hope the updates will take care of that.

EQ1A v2.8 is available for download. However I found a bug. After installation EQ1A.vst3 file has 0 KB in size. I already reported the problem to developer.
