Have to throw my 2c in again on this mod. Itβs an amazing accomplishment. Having used a 90βs SLO and the Max Mod side by side, I can say a lot about the topic, and offer a few tips:
1. Take the tube mic cable that ships with the unit and throw it in the ocean.
2. Get a high quality GAC7 tube mic cable. The difference between the stock and the super high quality cable is night and day. No offense Max, love the mod, but the cable that ships with the unit is not very balanced and a TON of detail is left on the table. Replacing the cable makes it a completely different mic.
3. Replace the stock tube with a NOS Amperex with the silver mesh. Best tube for that circuit hands down. IMO blows the NOS Tfunks out of the water. (On a budget the JJ Audio EF806S tubes sound pretty darn good in this circuit, as an aside)
4. The linear mode on the low cut filter, by itself, is way too aggressive to my ears...HOWEVER, engage the pad with the linear mode engaged and itβs a thing of beauty. The signal becomes very forward, balanced and Manley Ref C- like in its ability to sit anywhere in the mix.
5. A real 67 and this mod both love a cleaner preamp, generally speaking, especially on harmonically rich sources. I really do not like 1073 style pres with these mics (ducking cuz people will throw stuff at me for this statement)
6. That being said, and to prove that there are no hard and fast rules in this medium, found the 90S SLO and the mod to be a match made in heaven with a UA 6176. Oddly doesnβt work as well with a solo 610.
7. I agree that in stock mode there is a weird low mid bump happening on the Mod. Yβall arenβt crazy. It is less pronounced and easier to deal with when you follow my advice from
#1 and
#2 . Still there but less pronounced upon getting better, more balanced results from a better cable.
Very curious to hear what the updates are to the newest version of the Mod.
IMO, Max has made the true U67 sound available for a fraction of the cost. If you cant get a sound from the mod that is indistinguishable from a real U67, the problem isnβt the mic!
I have found everything you wrote but the NOS Amperex with the silver mesh.
My questions:
1. Please a link for the silver mesh NOS, I did google it and have found really inexpensive tubes, for like 4-10 dollars. Is this correct? (Im a noob, like treat me like a 5 year old).
2. Does it worth the trouble or if someone has the money to buy the re issue U67 and get it done with it? because by my calculations it will cost me 4K give or take with the changes you are suggesting.
BUT as you wrote, I would adore the "real" U67 sound and get into that trouble, which is not trouble at all because I will learn new things.
2. Can the real Neumann NU 67 V power supply work with this mod and the tube you are suggesting? Because Im thinking investing to that and get it done with it.
3. My mic of choice is TLM 67, because 1. I love the colors and 2. I really like it better than the sound of the U87.
4. Link for a cable thats for tubes? any help at all? because google is failing me right now.
I did find a nice cable but like I said im a noob, if I am to invest so much money at least have some help which ones to look out for.
For example I have found that one
https://microphone-parts.com/product...crophone-cable
and it pairs with a much less expensive power supply, but are they compatible? or Im looking at BS?
any info and take your time because I know I wrote a lot, but take your time to reply because I probably will invest in those things by the end of this year. So I have time to research and make best possible purchases till then, now its a baby plan.
Thank you so much for your time.
Im going for a full professional singing, here is a sample with a 50 dollar microphone and loads of EQ to make it sound good enough.

So, Im going into all that trouble to create a "signature sound", hopefully I will learn new things and achieve that. I just have a feeling with the type of my voice which has elements of rock voices, like thick rock voices that this little plan will give me the original U67 sound that will fit my voice.
Worst scenario the parts that Im looking are of a good quality and I can always sell them.
