I've wondered about the utility of a single band EQ, but I've found a couple of "interesting" uses.

1) A secondary filter that can act as a bandpass, lowpass or highpass filter when the gain is positive.

2) A phaser effect.

That last one needs some kind of automation, but just dinking around with it, it has a nice phasing sound if you set the gain to negative (I'm using -6.00db -- you have to hold the "Ctrl" key and move the mouse for precision movements), the Q at 1, then oscillate the frequency with the mouse between 684Hz (first negative mark) and 2400Hz (first positive mark).

It would be nice if there were some way to assign these in a mod matrix, or some free-running LFO effect that could generate specific a specific CC range that could then be used to "MIDI Learn" that CC within the plugin.

the latter can be done easily in Ableton Live, you can add an LFO utility and map it to the frequency of the EQ. Phaser? done

I use Audiority Pyros for this kind of driving

I think there is a TON of options for this nowadays.

My first go-tos for this would be:

AP - Echomixer - tasty Germanium saturation, just LOVES synths, has that kind of electric edge that the old Mackie mixers added.

Mixwave CA70S - a warmer approach, the best ever for fat punchy bass

Helios 69 - If you are not ashamed of fuzz, then this will blow your socks off

Golden 58 - In Mic mode this can add a wonderful fluffy round saturation, if more subtle is needed.

These are just more characterful and 'analog' sounding examples, but you could get pretty far with Saturn, or the likes too.

Arturia has that Coldfire thing, with a lot of saturation options, just for this kind of thing.

You can basically drive any good emulation of preamps out there. Fuse audio has LOTS of great stuff. Anything starting with "VPRE"

I had an old Mackie desk for this kind of stuff, but this 90s mixer-distortion approach is kind of like all-in or not-at-all thing, cause they are basically clipping the audio, so it will not sound great in-between, like a tube or a transformer - just when you go overboard the threshold. My first examples are much more well behaved, and can be dialed to taste. Except for the Helios, that one needs that mixer-distortion approach.

We were so fortunate to beta test the TAL-Pha. The EQ is one of the features we've asked for since we made some of those gabber tracks back in the day as well :-). Output saturation is asked for as well, would be great. A second LFO would be nice as well - but we use our DAW (Bitwig Studio in this case) for it.

It's not filters, it's mid-sweep of an eq.

Take any eq, boost the mids by a huge amount, then move the frequency.

It turns out that it's easily done in Reaper as well. I started using the "JS: MIDI CC LFO Generator" with no good results, then discovered the simplest way to do this is use the "Parameter Modulation/MIDI Link" and it's easy:

1) Click the control you want to automate (I chose the EQ Freq for the phaser effect)
2) Click the "Param" button at the top of the plugin window
3) Select the "Parameter Modulation/MIDI Link" option from the menu
4) Select the "LFO" button and go to town

I'm attaching a couple mgifs showing the setup and motion, as well as an MP3 render of the phaser effect. It's subtle in the recording I made, and rendering has to be done 1x, otherwise there's an unpleasant zippering effect. But it can be even better if the LFO rate is slowed down.

What would be truly epic if if the Voice Calibration panel controls were exposed -- automating each voice pan at different LFO speeds would add a lot of dynamic movement for ambient tracks.

Been test driving this the past few days. Really like it. A bit of unison with enough detuning, add some randomization on the voice tuning, ramp up the chorus, dial in the PWM and there you go: massive fatness that goes well beyond the original!

There are a couple of rough edges, but nothing I would consider breaking (unlike Roland Cloud stuff, which sub I just canceled).

Put it head to head with ReDominator. I thought I’d be able to pick a clear winner, but I’ve found they each excel in different areas. Guess I’ll keep em both. ReDominator does start to show its age though, Tal-Pha is definitely the more modern and flexible one.

That said, I’ve bought ReDominator in 2014 (!) in a cross grade discount for 45 EUR and the Tal-Pha is around 92 EUR including taxes, which is still cheaper than any single Roland synth and invasive manager software on either (and Roland has no equivalent anyway, though you can get very close with Zenology Pro).

I like software that just requires a key and nothing else and doesn’t hog the CPU or GPU. Not everything needs to be a subscription.

And I’d rather pay a small/indie dev than a big corporation.

You can make a very nice 4-track or 8-track setup with just Tal plugins + some stock plugins in your DAW of choice very easily (and to a lesser extent with AudioRealism too).

Gotta say I am loving this plugin. I couldn't recommend this developer highly enough.

One of my favorite independent developers for sure! Worth a look at all his other products. And I LOVE the Linux support too!

Incredibly versatile, and good presets. It's so different from subtractive synths that I have, which is why this has got to be my best synth purchase in a while. Those 80-90s synthwave sounds are amazing

I have all of the Softube synth emulations except for the Model 72 (Minimoog emulation). I don't know why I bought the Softube plugins when I already own very good emulations of all the these synths and even own the hardware in a few cases.

I don't think Softube brings anything particularly new or exciting to the table. Their synth emulations sound dry and boring to me and not as organic and lively as the hardware, for the most part at least. For instance, I think the Arturia, Roland Cloud, and TAL Juno 60/106 emulations sound better than Softube's Model 84 (Juno 106 emulation). And none of them truly nail the sound of the Juno 106 (although they get very close in places).

I think the TAL Pha Alpha Juno emulation sounds just as authentic as any of the Softube emulations, meaning that it doesn't sound identical to the hardware but close enough for a lot of people.

I had actually intended to compare my MKS-50 to the TAL Pha demo. But when I turned on my MKS-50 today, all of the patches were garbled including their names in the display. I tried to upload the factory patch library and the data is still messed up. Great. So now my MKS-50 needs to be serviced. Ugh.

I'm glad I came across the TAL Pha. The timing couldn't be better. I might even sell the MKS-50 once I get it fixed and put the money towards a newer piece of hardware or even patch banks for some of my synth plugins.
