I have owned Tupe, VulfComp and MegaVerb and for whatever reason, it has taken me a very long time to figure out how to use these plugins for my style of music (house that is more on the old school side) . It may be because these plugs just work like magic on live instruments like my bass and guitar , but on electronic it was a little trickier.
Vulfcomp clicked first and I use it all the time now on the drum buss in parallel. It does such a nice thing to the transients. Warms them up so nicely. Really makes a 909/808 style kit sound fatter and glued, which I love.
I have used Megaverb on and off and love it but I still need to really learn that plugin. I love the presets referencing older records but it doesn't really help me learn the plugs for specific tasks, which is how my brain tends to work.
Tupe I try on every mix but I usually end up pulling it off because I just am not using it well enough I think. But the last mix I did I put it on the Kick/Bass and Drum buss. Spent a bunch of time messing with settings and the first thing I noticed was the bass sounded so much better (Sh101). I added a lot of drive and compensated the output and it just added such a nice fullness to the sound while not being overbearing. It was a dramatic difference, kind of blew me away. I used the Joe Dart preset and just added back in a little more lows on the filter. Incredible.
On the kick it just rounded it out more and made it phatter which is exactly what I was looking for. Started with the Roots Kick preset there. That seems like a winner as a starting point.
For Drum buss I tried the electric feel setting and tweaked a little. Main thing I noticed was the added excitement to the drums that was missing when I turned it off. I also parallel the Vulf comp on there too.
I finally ran a vocal through it and just tweaked the default a bit. It really let me push the vocals into the mix more without sounding harsh.
So I am taking a break and waking up tomorrow to see if I still like what I did. Regardless, these plugins are so awesome, it just took me a little more work to figure out how to apply them to electronic instruments, for whatever reason. They work great though, I think it was just my own issues there.
