Anyone seen this? Looks like a direct rip of the old MXR unit?

It's a solid state pulse-width modulation circuit, stereo linkable. I actually have high hopes for this one, and at $149 the price is certainly right. Their tube-based gear has always offered lots of bang for the buck. I'll certainly snap up one of these for the price of dinner at a decent restaurant.

i've had a pair of the old ART pro VLA limiters in my rack since the 90's.

i used them on every record i've ever made, right along side daking, chandler, dbx, neve, urei, alan smart, altec, and spectrasonics compressors.

i've always used my dakings or one stereo VLA on my overheads for 20 years plus now.

they are always on my tom mics when tracking.

i'll have to check out these new comps. price is certainly right.

Wow! That's cool and really affordable. I love the MXR dual limiter. I'm greatly looking forward to how the two compare.

So how is this compared to Ozone's Maximizer . . . I mean, a rack unit that's cheaper than a plugin??

So, ART and Alesis were the two off-shoots from the death of MXR (along with Whirlwind)....we've seen Alesis's compressor and how it has fared, hopefully the ART will fare better.

Well yeah. You can pay $179 for the FabFilter Pro G, which is a decent gate, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Aphex 612 that you can buy on eBay all day long for less than a hundred bucks.

Ozone's maximiser is aimed at mastering so the ART dual limiter isn't a good comparison.

So.... any definitive word on if this is a MXR copy?

I have a bad habit of buying hardware comps, and using plugins.... but I never learn my lesson. This one has kinda caught my eye as I have always wanted to try the MXR.

Hilarious! I suffer the same habit until it's all on the line and I simply must get serious. Then I commence to violating the patch bays six ways to Sunday.



PS -- Yes, I've tried them (I own 2). They are colorful and a blast to use -- especially when you remember what you paid for them. I've heard they compare to the old MXR units, but I can't verify as I've never worked with said units.

anyone tried them? how about audio demos? anyone compared them to the mxr 136?

If I had to guess, the compression action is probably very similar, but the MXR probably sounds way more interesting.
I have a feeling that the ART would be too clean.

Right? I had the same question. Honestly, most plugins these days are so overpriced it's to the point of being ridiculous. The majority of the DSP algorithms and coding being used to model circuits are all well known, routine, and conventional. Very little novel coding is being done. Folks are mostly paying for GUI design. I wish the metering was better on this Art Limiter but I still might roll the dice on it...curious to see how it measures up against all the ITB limiters I have and use regularly (PSP Xenon, Sonnox, Nugen ISL, Slate FXG). The only other PWM comps/limiters I've seen are by Dave Hill/Crane Song and that Sknote italian DIY one. The manual has a cool little trick in it. The unit comes with a compressor (4:1) and limit ratio. But it also has two outputs (one XLR and one TRS). You can patch one of the outputs into the sidechain input and using the gain knob as a threshold, feed the output back into the sidechain and end up with two more ratios - 2:1 when set to limit and 1.15:1 when set to 4:1.

I returned mine.
The action was ok, but the tone did nothing for me.
It can get bombastic, though.

haven't tried this new limiter, but...i've had two of the original Pro VLA stereo tube optical limiters in my main recording rack for 20 plus years.

i love those things, they got used right along side my daking, chandler, alan smart, manley, dbx, altec, ua, urei, neve and api compressors.

they really are great.

i've used one as a parallel drum buss compressor on pretty much every mix i did for 20 years.

definitely got my money's worth out of them over the years.

Received mine today. I will add it to my rack and I will see what it sounds like (best would be to barely hear it)

Hey Davanlo; Any chance you could share any experience you've had with the Art PWM Dual Limiter since receiving yours some time ago?

I just received mine... I've just been playing with it for an hour but I think it sounds great, it can get super aggressive yet it sounds clean and clear, on drums it's awesome, on snare it's great for that rock snare sound, loving it on vocals too, I got a great rock vocal sound very quickly, super in your face! It can be subtle too but I bought this to smash things through it and I think it sounds better than a plugin plus the price is right.

Yes, it appears to be a direct ripoff of the old MXR unit. The design is nearly identical, and the functionality seems to be the same as well. It's possible that this is a counterfeit product, or it may be an unauthorized clone.
