I checked the Mbox Pro 3 manual and on page 43 it says that the switch turns the power on for all 4 mic inputs. So no independent switching.

Which means no u87 + Coles 4038 with mbox3?
How would you do?

The main thing is that you want to power up the mikes after everything is plugged in.

Also, concerning the Mbox Pro, does anyone know of a way to use the alt inputs 6/8 as line inputs for external pres? I know they are meant for a CD player or iPod etc. input, but I'm curious if, in a pinch, you can potentially get 8 inputs from mics into this thing.

Considering buying the MBox 3 Pro - Mixer Standalone Mode?

When in mixer sub-standalone mode, can different mixer preset "scenes" (different mixes) be set up and used or is mixer sub-standalone mode just a one-size-fits-all mix?

I have been using inputs 7/8 with a DBX 386 2 channel pre-amp with no problems so far. The DBX has A/D converters and outputs a 2-channel S/PDIF signal, which I have connected to the S/PDIF input (channels 7/8) of the Mbox Pro. I don't have another external preamp, but the analog RCA inputs of the MBox's channels 5/6 accept line level sources, so I would think you can run an external preamp into those. Just keep in mind in order to do that you have to run the output of your preamp into the RCA input in the MBox Pro, so you probably need a couple 1/4" to RCA adaptors.

Long story short, there is a way to run 8 mics into the MBox Pro, but it's not as simple as it could be.

IS this true? Also would a Daking Mic pre one or GAP 73 perform better than the Pre-amp on the Mbox 3?

Just use the Line Level inputs on the back, they bypass the MBox 3 preamp circuit entirely.

If I was to guess (having heard neither) the Daking would probably be nicer than the Mbox pre. But I'm sure the new mbox pre's are more than usable.

Update*** I checked the signal path diagram on all three mbox3 models and only the pro has a signal path that can bypass the pre's on the box.

OSX/Mbox3/MboxPro users:

- at what buffer settings do you normally use it?
- do you use it with PT 8/9 or another DAW?
- how's stability?
- does CPU overhead increase noticeably when you select lower buffer settings like 64 samples?

Contemplating whether this would make a good partner for Cubase on OSX.

Mbox Pro has almost zero latency monitoring through its mixer software.
Just set the hbs in pt to 512 samples and forget about it.

I use it with pt9. Works just fine here, and my sessions are at 96 kHz.
Works fine even at 192 kHz.

CPU overhead will increase with lower buffer settings. That's why i reccomend you
set it to 512 or higher, and setup zero latency monitoring through the mixer (se link above)

Hello Fnulnu , I have been having trouble trying to connect my Dbx 386 to my Mbox Pro (3rd gen) via the spdif input and noticed that you have the same set up! i am using LE 8.4 on a windows 7 computer. Can let me know your Routing and how you have your cables connected and what cables you are using ? this would be a huge help to me !!

Thanks for your reply. However, I plan to use it with Cubase primarily and just learn the bundled ProTools at a leisurely pace. As such I find a hardware buffer of 512 unacceptable for playing software instruments. 256 is workable, 128 (or lower) is better. I just wonder how much of a hit CPU performance takes when running at these buffer sizes?

The new MBox 3 Pro features all new converters over the MBox 2.
Black Lion Mod states the following:

"The Mbox3 Pro is Avid’s redesign of the old consumer-grade Pro Tools interface, the Mbox2, but now with Cirrus Logic CS4272 converters, which feature 24-bit/192kHz conversion and a dynamic range of 114dB (the same converters used in the Apogee Duet and Ensemble).

So in terms of just the converters I would say the MBox 3 Pro is probably doing a pretty good job.
