is it me or the obvious not said... the dualGHZ have BEEN shipping for quite some time.

it underwhelming. I hope the configuration is nice with something new. The entry level Dual 867 is good. Logic on OSX should be Dual capable soon and so having all Dual procs makes me think this is happening soon.

Today should be the day. Keep your eyes peeled towards apple.com.

Checking closer, there are bus speed improvements and memory speed improvements as well. The 1.2GHz should be a bigger power bump than just the CPU speed increase suggests.

But what else can you do when your CPU provider (Motorola) feels they have bigger fish to fry than desktoop CPUs? More concerning for Apple is this:

Sales of the PowerMac collapsed this year, down 26 per cent from the same quarter last year, which the company attributed to "current economic conditions are having a pronounced negative impact on its professional and creative customers.........."

26 percent. That's large. Look for Apple to be seriously checking out the AMD Hammer or IBM Power4......and quick. It comes down to the newbie at CompUSA looking to get a computer. There's just too much explaining to do about why they should buy the computer with what seems to them, according to the numbers, the "slower" CPU. Something has to change.

Intel is even giving AMD sales grief with their higher MHz numbers. Still slower than AMD for most uses, but don't bother people with the facts. It's just the way it is in trying to market a product to the masses. Bigger is always percieved as better, true or not. That's a problem Apple will have to solve if they don't want to continue to lose market share. Any other approach is wishful thinking.

Apple has basically stated that they only plan to break even for Q4.

Apple seems like they're planning to keep the ship stable before making any rough changes. I agree somewhat with that plan.

I do believe Apple will be changing processor platforms in a year. The G4 will probably remain as it make a nice proc for situations where heat is an issue.

for the newbie looking to get a computer for surfing the net and sending emails... computers have been fast enough for YEARS. my 9600 still hums along just fine for 99% of everyday tasks. of course its running 8.1

only the serious gamers, creative types [graphics. video. audio] need to be concerned with breakneck speeds.

But cars only really need to go about 80MPH. People still want to see at least 120+ on the speedo, though I doubt more than 5% of drivers have ever even thought about doing that speed.

It's not about what people actually need.
It's about what people actually want. They pretty much always want bigger/more. Human nature.

Now OTOH, when I had a producer show up last week for a mix with about 90 tracks, I needed speed. 4 passes of RADAR to get everything into my rig. You're right. Some creative people actually do stress this stuff to the max.

I'm mixing stuff that would require acrobatics on an 80 channel SSL, and using basically a glorified word processor on steroids to do it.

Life is strange.

with an 8" floppy?

i dont know about the car thing... very few people own a car that can do realistically past 100mph. i have done 155mph on a US highway before.... actually come to think of it, it was a state highway, not that it matters much. yep, for 5 split seconds before i had to massively slow down to get on 40. i havent done it since, mostly i hang around 80-90mph on the highways. but im one of the few [i might get "taggers" from time to time, funny how you form a 'relationship' with them after 250miles or so and never even meet them] most people are basically standing still as i fly by... but living in DC i have been going 75mph and had cops pass me [and everyone else going 75mph] doing about 90. i must say i love the fact they raised the speed limit to 70 in large parts of the areas... now if they could get it up to 80, i wouldnt get so many tickets.

Geez. after rereading this thread, I realize what a total tech geek I am.
