Me like Logic 8... I can't even remember what 7 looked like. I used to use screensets all the time, now I just use the tabs... so I guess this humble user got used to it...

logic is fabulous for writing

pro tools is great for recording

but you can make both work in both situations

in reality they are converging as technologies and the differences are slowly disappearing

Ive also noticed this loop thing.. Does anyone know why sometimes PT wont play/loop short highlited regions? Like 1/4 note in length for example?

I gotta say, having just got Pro Tools 8, it is a tough one. I LOVE the built in plugins in Logic, the single window workflow, the fact that I seem to be able to run double the plugins that I can in Pro Tools.....that said, Pro Tools is a more capable audio editor. Always has been. It was made to be a replacement for Tape, and no editor has come close to being as good at that as Pro Tools.

In the end, neither is better or worse. It all depends on what your end goal is.

This just shouldn't be the case.

Here's the deal breaker for me: Logic allows me to use any interface I want including Digi. Protools? Only their own crappy ones. When HD studios still use Apogee converters that says quite a bit.

There's really nothing (or nothing much) that was available in the old interface that isn't available in the new one. If you like separate windows for each area of your work (i.e., mixer, arrange, piano roll, etc.), they are all still available and are bound to cmd-1 cmd-2 etc. You can create screen sets to call up a whole bunch of windows at once. The environment is still there. Channel strips can be auto-managed, but they don't have to be if you want the old behavior. And so on. To me, the improvement from 7 to 8 seemed pretty dramatic and pretty much a clear win.

Not sure about changing the overall color scheme, but some of the windows, like the piano roll, allow control over the colors.

That's probably true, but it seems to me that PT is covering Logic ground a lot faster than the other way around.

Logic doesn't come close to protools as an audio editor, while PT is shaping up to be quite a respectable and usable compositional tool.

After years of splitting up projects, and using OMF to transfer files in order to to finish my work in protools, I'm finding that the speed required to complete projects these days demands that I begin mixing right from the compositional stage.

So it looks like PT all the way for me as soon as I can get around to installing that PT 8 upgrade!

The correct would be some uses apogees, some uses prism, etc. But many use the digi192, which is, regardless of the constant bashingtrend, quite a good converter. I remember many high quality production ran through them. Their interfaces aren't crappy imho.
This always the equipment's fault makes me remember Ethan Winer's big sentence: "if the sound sucks, it never because the sampling rate"

I agree with this, I use a 192 going in to my system, and to bring in delay compensated inserts, alongside an Apogee DA-16x that takes 16 outs for analog summing, and an Apogee rosetta 200 to bring those back in for the 2 bus.

A truly hybrid system, and I have no complaints whatsoever about the sound of my 192.

I think you need to give it a little more time. People always don't like change, but IMHO both PT8 and Logic 8 are considerable upgrades although unfortunately, Logic still hasn't improved it's audio editing. dI think if you use Logic 8 a bit more you'll eventually like the interface better. Logic 8 seems a little more stable to me as well. You can lighten up the background color if you want, its under Logic Pro > Preferences > Display > Other. See attached thumbnail.

I'm just reporting what is happening. I get very low plugin counts in PT vs Logic.

Happens to me too. But Logic annoys me when I save my comps, only to come back the next day, and they're completely different.

Both programs have their ups and downs.

Like I said, I wish they would combine. That will never happen though.

I actually use an apogee interface but I can use digi002 for logic.
It didnt work at first and the issue was solved by using a shorter firewire cable

May be a silly question. Is it possible sync a computer running PT with another one running Logic and keep the composing separate from the audio tracking till its time to consolidate to one system for mixdown?

I have been using mostly PT HD in my pro studio for a very long time now and I have recently move to logic for my home setup for writing duties mostly. So far I must admit that Protools 8 has been very unstable with 3 rd party soft synth (unless it is there own stuff), especially with the Native instruments Komplete.

I have done every single upgrade possible it still does not work properly and crash randomly all day long when using soft synth... With logic 8 I have not experienced a crash yet... now i spent $30000 on PT in my pro studio and $500 on logic

Yes PT is great for recording, editing and mixing but writing music with it is very frustrating to me, unless you do everything with recorded audio. The loop mode for example... even though it does let you insert plug in on the fly, it still interrupt the audio signal for a second... super annoying when you are trying to get in the zone... and eventually it will crash if the use a bunch of soft synths together for too long even though I've got a super loaded computer (mac 8 core with 8 gig of ram)....

A lot of digidesign dudes out there told me that it must be my computer that is setup wrong for it to be that unstable... I followed every single step they've told me to get my computer to run smoother (eg. enable only 5 processors for 8 cores... buffer size of a min of 128 because I have a PCI expension chassis etc...) well logic seems to be liking it the same computer much more and has crashed yet... so is it my computer? or just protools?

Man I get sick and tired of hearing that same bullshit over and over and frickin over again.

Whatever. I challenge Digi to come around to my place to witness my issues first hand after following EVERY SINGLE DETAILED REQUIREMENT—and then I'd like to see them try tell me "it's your computer/not Pro Tools fault/blah blah blah" dfegad

It's a piece of cake, but to be honest, you are likely better of going the opposite route (tracking and editing in PT, then moving to Logic to mix). The only time I spend in PT LE anymore is prepping the transfer of sessions to Logic to mix and/or doing some heavier editing (can't beat PT's editing workflow when it comes to audio). Actually realized recently that I much prefer mixing in natively in Logic than mixing in HD as well, which was actually a bit of a shock.

I think it is just pretty embarrassing or DIGI that PT 8 which was supposed to be "the" upgrade is just crashing 1/2 the time I want to open a VSTi... and it is not only me, it is everybody I know who's got Protools HD....
Also when I asked Digidesign the good old school question that everybody has been asking for years: Could you guys maybe implement a Phase switch on every channel?, they always hide behind the same answer... "Oh we would have to hire another programmer for that and we would have to re-write the whole code of PT and we don't want to do that, it's a lot more complex than what you think"..... Well maybe you should DIGI, I have been hearing the same answer for years now. You guys must be making enought bucks to hire another programmer if that's the problem.. because when you are managing to make simple things like MP3 export or OMF import a payable option ($US400 for digi translator).... it is just ridiculous, theses should be part of protools anyway
At the end of the day, PT could be such a better software if the company would change it's politics a little, instead of trying to squeeze every single dollar out of every single angle they can think of.

I don't think rewriting the whole code would help much - if you refer to Pro Tools HD. When you use the DSP power of a HD system, you'll soon discover that it lacks dynamic allocation of the DSP power.

This means that if you have a song with 80 tracks, and all those 80 tracks would have something equivalent to a phase switching plugin built-in, the DSP needed for performing this task would be 'busy' throughout the whole song even when there's no activity on that track.

The end result is that there would be a lot less DSP available for other tasks. Since even a HD7 system doesn't have more DSP power than a fast Mac, that would be a huge mistake.

I know other guys who do the same thing... make beats in Logic, then mix in ProTools. They say the final mix sounds better, bigger, in PT. Is there any validity to this?

And you get the guy's who say the opposite , i think it's up how good you are as a mixer

I use both Logic and Pro tools - actually I only use pro tools to have a say...

pros and cons
1. pro logic: Make logic work as professional as pro tools HD, you "only" need a good ad-converter and a standard contemporary macpro. "ONLY", because everybody knows the price-issue between those two softwares...
2. pro logic: usability, workflow etc. a different world, probably made by musicians.:-)
3. pro pro tools: all the sound ingeniers of the last century use it and in order to have a say, you need to know how to work with it.

It might be obvious that I highly prefere LOGIC and for that reason my post shouldn`t be taken to serious - especially as there aren`t any cons mentioned in my pro/ cons listing:-)(actually my pro logic list would be very, very long)

One true opinion I have though: if you aren`t looking for a job as a producer, who actually should know how to work pt and you are a musician, that needs a topend professional DAW to make professionel demos - go for logic.

So the title is correct, and a new thread necessary to compare PT 8 and Logic 9.

Easy newbie mistake to make though...

I just finished up a Christmas album for a local charity. Most of the tracking and mixing was done in Pro Tools 8, some in Logic 8, and I mastered the album in Logic 8. I think they're both outstanding programs, and I could easily have completed the entire project using either application exclusively. That being said, the previously stated workflow is my preference. I like Pro Tools for recording and editing, Logic for mastering, and I'll mix in either.

I won't lie! This is really just a plug for the album, but since it's free anyway I don't see the harm.

I been using Logic since Logic 5. I'ma huge fan of Logic, but Pro Tools 8 really impressed me. I never liked Pro Tools for its look and feel. But Pro Tools 8 look new and fresh. And the midi in Pro Tools 8 is greatly improved from 7.4. If I had a choice I would still track in Logic just beacuse the plug-ins you get with Logic are way more and better than Pro tools

i've been using logic since v5 and got pro tools at a couple of months ago. to begin with my pro tools install disc didn't work and when i managed to download and install pro tools i discovered my M box was faulty. after two weeks i finally get it all working and i've hardly touched logic 8 since. i've only been going there to finish projects i'd already started and moving things over from logic to pro tools has saved a few songs. The pro tools workflow is much better and i'm getting much more stuff done since the change. i've barely touched pro tools midi, which is weird since i compose electronic music. having said that i prefer logic for midi and i miss a few plug-ins and instruments. with pro tools i rather play my synths live and edit the audio once it's recorded.

that's right ... for the sake of comparisson , Logic 9 has Flexitime ,wich was unthinkable on 8 and puts Logic pretty close to some PTs features ...
