M4 vs M4 pro - Page 2

Question for you guys,
I mix mostly and in Cubase. I use a Sh!!!t ton of plugs in my mixes and some very cpu intensive. Im about to upgrade from an m1 laptop with 64gigs ram. I don't run in Rosetta. Besides this system not really being able to handle what I throw at it very well the load times of the sessions can be 5 to 10 minutes. And the close time unloading mixers etc can take a few minutes! Can you guys recommend some important specs based on this information as to what I should look for in the M4 upgrade please? Thanks in advance!!

Unloading taking significant time could point to swapping paged out memory back in. Aka lack of RAM.

What is your swapfile use before such an unloading? Is the CPU busy during unloading?

Otherwise there isn't much to do, the M4 SSDs are not much faster than M1's. But more RAM generally helps when waiting for disks.

Aren't (bigger) SSDs on M4 about 5,000- 7,000 MB/s whereas M1s are about 3,000 or so?

I forgot the throughput numbers (which don't matter much) but the seeking is very comparable.

M1 MBP 16 Pro" has served me well since 01/2022 as my main (music) production machine . Super convenient to toggle between two different studio locations and have a 2nd screen at hand. But having an average of 70 tracks per track with a lot of SW synths and stuff it's starting to come to its limits. Thinking about a Mac Studio M4. Small enough for taking it in the plane and hook it up to my system in my 2nd studio .....

If not needing the GPU oomph, the mini with the 10 perf cores is very close in speed to a Max with 12, and way easier to transport.

But even the studio isn’t huge by any means, just think of a protective case. How big would it be? The mini with a very protective case can still easily fit in a backpack.

The base M4 should offer a significant improvement over the M1 for your resource-intensive audio applications, although the difference isn't revolutionary. If budget is a major consideration, the base M4 will be an excellent choice and will better meet your needs than an M1.
