Update on this. I unplugged the ethernet cable (POE) and went back to USB connection (direct to computer) and USB power. That was working fine, even with the latest firmware. But suddenly now I can't connect it that way - the remote management software says that the IP address can't be found. I tried deleting the MT-48 network device and restarting, but I still keep getting that message. If I connect it back to ethernet it works. Computer is M1 MacBook Pro running Sonoma OS 14.2.1.
I opened a support ticket with Neumann, we'll see.
To be clear, I was still able play audio through the device, but could not open the Toolkit
They responded that I should try initializing the unit (hold down talk and mute while restarting), and if that didn't work (it didn't) try uninstalling the software. However, they do not provide an uninstaller (AFAIK), so I had to search for and nuke everything related to the app. Here is how it went:
I deleted everything I could find on the Mac hard disk related to the Toolkit.
I could not delete this - the system wouldn’t allow it:
/Library/SystemExtensions/6FF507AC-6F99-41BF-BB25-EC16CF9AC8FD/com.merging.dext.NeumannMT48USBAudioLowLatency.dext
After deleting everything else, I shut down the computer, disconnected the MT-48 from ethernet, and started it back up by initializing it. Then I connected it to the computer via USB-C port, and started up the computer. Then I reinstalled the Toolkit, version MT48ToolKit_Mac_1.5.7_56838.
Then I restarted the computer. Upon restart, there was no MT-48 icon in the Mac menu bar. Opening it from /Applicarions gave me a message that it was running in the menu bar, but it wasn’t. Digging down into the Application bundle I ran this from a terminal: /Applications/NeumannMT48.app/Contents/MacOS/NeumannMT48
Here was the output:

/Applications/NeumannMT48.app/Contents/MacOS/NeumannMT48 ; exit;

You can see there were some things that “failed” in there.
So then I found this:
/Applications/NeumannMT48.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/NeumannMT48Agent.app
I manually added that to Startup Items and restarted. Now it appears in the menu bar, but I still got this message:
Unable to retrieve IP address of device
MT48_000821.local
So I went into the MT-48 ethernet settings and set it at a manual address of 10.1.1.2, with a mask of 255.255.255.0, and a gateway of 10.1.1.1 - none of these actually exist on my network. Then I went into the Mac, added the Neumann MT-48 back as a network device, and set the Mac to address 10.1.1.3, same gateway as above. Then restarted. That worked - now I can access the Toolkit without the unit being connected to my LAN network. However, if I ever want to reconnect it to the LAN, I will have to set the MT-48 to DHCP mode and that might break this whole setup. (Why would I do that? Well then if connected to LAN, I could access the controls remotely from another computer or iPad, which could be useful in some situations).
In my opinion there are some serious problems with the Toolkit software, and maybe the firmware, as you can see from above. I hope this gets fixed.
