MOTU 8pre Clipping Problem

I have a MOTU 8pre and I'm getting distortion that sounds like clipping coming from the output of my guitar amp. It seems to only be present in the main outs to my studio monitors, not the headphone out. I tried using a direct box Hi to Lo Z, but that didn't help. I also tried lowering the amp volume and input volume in Sonar. My previous interface was a Roland Octacapture, and everything was connected the same way without any problem. I noticed that the 8pre's preamp is a lot hotter than the Roland. Any help would be appreciated.

.. what sort of output on what amp are we speaking of?

How are you setting gain? Do you have a pad option? Rated impedances? Cable type, balanced, TRS, TS etc? These are things that potentially matter.

At the other end of the setup, what monitors? Are you running them on balanced TRS cables? DO you have the output level of the interface matched to the input levels on the monitors? So the monitors have any way of displaying input clipping and is it indicating such?

I’m using the Focusrite Control the website recommended. I’ve been an Apollo guy for a long time

Thanks for the responses. I have the main outs of the 8pre going into an amp with passive speakers attached. Looks like the problem was that I had the output level on the 8pre all the way up. When I lowered the main out level the distortion went away. Brain freeze moment...
