I still dream of a professional controller (does not matter if it has 24 faders or 8 + extenders) with meterbridge and flexible control of Auxs and EQ.

Something like a DM1000 without the frontend + mixer itself.
Make the Auxs sends controllable with the faders (like on the Yamaha digital consoles) and make a little dedicated pan and EQ section where you don't have to step through menu pages to acces the parameters but can grab an EQ parameter directly (again like the DM1000). And don't forget to make the EQ graph or plugin window appear on the TFT screen when adjusted!

Like someone mentioned there's nothing inbetween the Mackie Control and the 15K Nuendo controller by WK Audio. time for a change!

On a digital console, does the fader REALLY touches the audio? Or it touches the numbers?

digital data and motors CAN be heard when in close proximity to very low noise, very high gain analog circuits.. Ever had a poorly made USB or Firewire cable sing to you?

One very important thing this lacks for me is S/PDIF. I guess it's not intended to be a stand alone interface with your DAW software?

I do not understand. There are many audio interfaces with S/PDIF for sure
but I can't think of any high end pieces that employ S/PDIF. There is a 2track input
that would yield better results than a 2 track digital input. As for the computer out,
you have 12 of them on the n8 and 16 of them on the n12 over firewire.

I'm talking about S/PDIF connections on amp modelers and some processing gear, like reverb units etc..

You mentioned "high end" gear here, I didn't think we were talking about Apogee, Lynx etc. In the price range of the N12 I could get a RME Fireface 800 which has S/PDIF and decent converters although I expect the N12/8 to most certainly have better preamps.

So unless I were to keep my Delta 1010 I would have to use the analog outs on my modeler to the 2 track input on the N12. That's not really a big deal because I also use tube amps for recording. Modeler's are just another tool to use.

I will say the N12 looks VERY interesting and I've been reviewing the manual. I'm a Sonar user but the N12 will work with it.

One thing I am wondering about is where the N12 would stack up against my Delta 1010 in converter sound quality. Does the N12 use AKM converters similar to the i88X which are the same as the 1010? I'm looking at tracking acoustic drums in the future and the N12 would fit nicely for that.

the n series has much better specs than the i88x. Less noise, more air, more gainwhich is still very good. We are very excited about the n series.
Don't be fooled by the lower price tag, it definitely has the high price specs and sound.

I'm also very interested in the n12.
I want to use it to record mainly voice and acoustic guitars.
I've taken a brief look at the manual, but I still would like to know this for sure:
Is it possible to use the built-in effects, like compression/EQ/Reverb, only for queing the performers but record all tracks "dry", dus by-passing all effects?

You bet as far as Rev X reverb or VST "wet" monitoring.
As with any mixer or Mic Pre with compression and EQ those are "in-line" and would "Print" to your DAW, However... (this is what's cool with the Advanced Integration with Cubase AI or Cubase)

You can use VST compression and EQ or amp simulation, whatever VST effect you want and monitor it "Live" to the Aux output (headphone Mix) without printing it.
Then once you have recorded it you can use either VST or the n's Compressor EQ or Reverb. You can also print the VSTs if you want There are even more ways to route and record as well.
This "Avanced Integration" thing between Steinberg and Yamaha is pretty cool.

The n is not a bedroom toy it's a small footprint tool that supports a new workflow
that is growing rapidly. Sadly, more and more engineers are being forced to work in smaller rooms or at home. The n series is the product of many conversations with a lot of engineers. It's another tool in the toolbox. You request has been heard.

I’ve looked at, and have played around with controllers and I’m not interested in them. I’ve learned to mix in the box and don’t really have any problems with it. How the N12 integrates is what’s got my interest. One bummer is that I’ve got like $680 invested into Sonar and like tracking and mixing with it.

George, can the Cubase version that comes with the N12 do track folders? I don’t really have a need for more than 48 tracks on playback but when I’m recording I may exceed that with many takes on different tracks. If I get a N12 I don’t really want to but the full blown Cubase…just too much money considering how much I have in Sonar. But then I have tried out Reaper and that’s really got me crying in my coffee/

Sure you can have folders as well as group faders so you can make different mixes of different takes. Video tracks for woking with video. Cubase AI is not a toy. It just doesn't have 5.1 capability.

Yes the preamps are very special. First, they are discreet component. Even the capacitor used in the amp is a special design to give it a unique character.

It's doubtful that the amazing noise specs could be obtained using connectors for each channel strip or at it's low price point.

They are built like tanks and hefty for their size.
