I realized I'd not installed my midi interfaces so I went to M-audio's site to check. The latest available driver is

MIDI USB Driver v3.5.3 (MAC)

- released in the fantastic year... 2009!

Of course it doesn't support macOS Catalina - in fact it's not possible to run through the installer at all.

I'm sitting here with two big Midisport interfaces (4 x 4 and the 8 x 8) -

Please tell me that someone wrote a driver for these as they're not even lighting up when connected.

It would be possible for me to use them on an older machine but then I can't use Logic Pro X which is what I want to do this time.

Any insightful helpful ideas?

Those things barely worked in 2004 let alone now. If its 32 bit (you said you cant even run the installer), Catalina is what's stopping you. Probably works ok in Mojave. I haven't installed (or even remember where I put it) my Oxygen 8 in awhile, but those old-ass drivers that hadn't been updated since dirt was invented, still seemed to work in El Capitan/Sierra last time I bothered using it. Probably still works up to Mojave.

Well that doesn't help me as I won't use another macOS as like I said I am using Logic Pro X and good luck using that on an older OS. But anyway, thing is why doesn't m-audio simply publish a new usb text file (commonly known as driver) so we can use their old interfaces? Or someone hanging around here who knows how to do those things. Would be purdy golden.

I finally gave up on my Midisport 2x2, picked up an iRigMIDI 2

I think something/ somebody was lost in the Digidesign/Avid and back M-Audio transition.

In case it helps anybody else, the 4x4 Anniversary Editions do work fine up to and including Mojave.

And this is with that 2009 3.5.3 driver? Can't someone hack a new driver to all of us on Catalina? Pleeeease

No they don't recieve any power over usb otherwise - the 8x8 might work as it's got external powering but the 4x4 doesn't light up at all

My 4x4s are class compliant. No drivers necessary on Win Vista, 7 8.1 and,10.

I didn't have a MIDI keyboard connected at all times, used a cheap USB keyboard.

I became aware after updating OSX, and when I was selling my MIDI hardware the MIDIsport was dead.

I used the USB keyboard to connect MIDI hardware.

Hmm one of our largest stores here Emusic still lists all the Midisport interfaces so something is clearly fishy about M Audio.

I had to switch out my 2X2 for a Roland UM ONE MKII. it runs right into a serial MTP AV and I was only using the one port in any case. in my case on high sierra, the 32bit Midi driver of the 2X2, was hobbling another unit needing to run on the core Midi system, using Mac OS’s 64bit Bluetooth Midi driver.

after looking into it a little, it seems 64bit Bluetooth Midi drivers can’t live alongside a 32bit Midi driver. I think it’s because, if Bluetooth Midi needs to work at 64bit into the core Midi system, then a 32bit Midi driver may force the USB subsystem, to pull down to 32bit. potentially something along those lines. in the case of the BT Midi, it simply won't work untill the 2X2 driver was taken out of its enclosing folder and moved somewhere else. or deleted. I moved mine to a desktop folder.

so I’d think that if this is true and apple already know it, then apple tend to manage these deprecations of driver bit depth support, in an incremental and phased fashion. but the strategy is to not really mention anything about any of it.

that took some investigating as it goes. but this video explained that this was probably my specific issue.
the guy in the video is having the same problem, but with a driver for his waves soundgrid.
I can only imagine the amount of Roli Blocks and Soundgrid problems, which occurred
due to the effects of phased deprecations. this video is a good exhibit for the case.

I have now released an open source 64 bit version of the MIDISPORT driver that works for Mojave and Catalina at https://sourceforge.net/projects/midisport-macos/files/. Hope this helps folks be more creative with the gear they have.

I'm following the steps but I can't get it work. I'm stuck at step 5. After restart nothing happens. I tried to run the firmware downloader from here /usr/local/libexec/MIDISPORTFirmwareDownloader but this is the message I'm getting : Missing hardware configuration file. Usage: /usr/local/libexec/MIDISPORTFirmwareDownloader configfile.xml

I'm on Big Sur (11.2.3) and want to use my old Oxygen 8 keyboard. Any advice? Thanks!

My issue now is that all MIDI in ports are locked to the same channel in my Mac, so I can't use different controllers for different sounds. I went to Audio MIDI Setup and see the option for assigning, but everything is greyed out. Any ideas, anybody?

Are you on Mojave? I used the latest 32 bits driver from M-Audio and I know it works.

Not sure if the behavior is different for MIDI channels assignment though.
