I guess what matters is using mono reverbs is not such a novel technique, but using this technique doesn't involve avoiding stereo reverbs nor is it forcing you to "mix in m/s", whatever that may mean for a specific producer. I use all three techniques as I please and I feel everyone should just try techniques in different ways and see how they sound. In the end, it's your mix that matters, no?

I like the classic "opposite side" mono reverb when I pan a mono source to one side and the mono reverb response to the other. Could be something else there too or instead, of course.

How much CPU does this one need typically? I'll try the demo, just curious.

I love Nimbus and all other Exponential Audio reverbs, but for anyone who doesn't already have those I'd recommend to stay away, because they have basically reached their end of life. iZotope is no longer maintaining them according to this.

They have fairly regular sales at up to 50% off max, so these sales are a good time to pick something up if you want it - I picked up Sonsig in one of their sales...

The LX480 is the most CPU-consuming reverb I own (and I own a lot of reverbs), but I should say that I'm on Apple Silicon and they don't provide native support yet, so maybe this will improve. But the CPU increase I'm seeing when I use the LX480 is crazy, two or three instances will already lead to pops and crackles on an M1 Max at 64 samples buffer size.

Ironically, the Lexicon algorithms they are replicating run on 40-year old hardware which by today's standards has all the computing power of a pocket calculator

Yeah, by all means, the more people email iZotope and tell them that they find it outrageous that these reverbs aren't being maintained anymore, the better. I did, too. I doubt it'll change their minds, but it can never harm if customers voice their opinions loudly.

I wish Exponential Audio had never been acquired by iZotope. It's really sad. These are some of the absolute greatest reverbs out there (with admittedly ugly GUIs), made by the guy who was involved in making some of the most famous reverbs in reverb history, and iZotope just lets them rot there.

I asked Michael Carnes about it and he replied that he can't do much because he is no longer affiliated with iZotope in any way, but he seems equally sad about this development.

Something doesn't seem right about that . . . I run several instances of LX480 along with other stuff and it doesn't mess up my CPU. Reaper/late 2013 MacBook. If your situation is strictly M1 related, that sucks, and it's also weird. I wonder if anyone else with Apple Silicon is having the same issue.

What exactly is your goal here? You're kind of acting like a mystical guru speaking in riddles. I think the other poster was asking you to explain your comments, not be lectured down to.

Personally I find mono delays more useful than mono verbs.

IZotope has tried to walk it back and claim they meant other products were taking first priority. But I have stopped using them on new projects. I need long term recall. I owned them before the acquisition so yes it was a shame to see them quickly abandoned.

Generally yes it is. And we all use mono verbs for ADR and foley. But also short delays for room slap and exteriors.

Izotope acquired Exponential and it rounded-out their lineup. They acquired it and did very little else, and are now doing nothing else.

Back to reverbs I'd like to pick up the Micro Digital by Korneff but I really don't need it... Any users particularly happy with it? Does it have the Midiverb II Bloom?

Well, they also built a new reverb plugin under the iZ brand with modern UI/frameworks, using EA's reverb tech, and doubtless any product going forward that has a reverb in it will probably also be built from those algorithms and IP, rather than having to write one from scratch.

Jot is VERY well known within the reverb designer community. His publications in the 1990s extended the Gerzon/Stautner/Puckette concepts of feedback delay networks, and introduced the idea of having frequency dependent attenuation for every delay in an algorithmic reverb. Jot also published a fair amount on environmental reverbs while at Creative Labs, and has worked on immersive audio at DTS.

From the perspective of a reverb developer, iZotope has access to a few different schools of reverb design: the academic feedback delay network (FDN) approach of Jot, and the commercial "trade secret" world of Michael Carnes' work at Lexicon and Exponential Audio. These are most likely different designs under the hood, so it will be interesting to see what iZotope comes out with in the future. They have 180+ employees, and several other PhD sorts that have reverb design skills (Kurt James Werner comes to mind, who recently published a paper on time varying allpass delays that would be relevant to reverbs).

You should stay way if you're on an Arm based Mac. They will continue to work just fine for the foreseeable future on Windows.

That's beside the point of what I suggested. If a developer drops maintenance support for a product that you aren't already using, it's generally a good idea not to start using it, regardless of what platform you're on. No need to complicate your life by starting to rely on a new reverb plugin that already has an expiry date, even if that expiry date is unknown for Windows users.

First off, I recommend we just ignore this F Jupiter character from here on out, I'm exhausted already by his ongoing condescension and contempt for others in here. He'd find a better fit over at KVR, where that kind of posting is standard.

RE: the Micro Digital Reverberator. Sadly, it does not have the Midiverb II Bloom. The 2nd mode is indeed a MidiVerb II 'emulation', but an incomplete one. The whole thing is IR based, btw, in case that's not clear. It's not an algorithmic emulation.

That said, the first mode (the microverb emulation) is what I think it's worth buying for. There are some absolutely wonderful 'set it and forget it' patches on that thing. I use it quite a bit, and have found it sits quite well in the mix. It's like a simpler, cheaper, far less flexible version of GoodHert'z 'Megaverb' plugin (which is algorithmic; but they are both going for the same retro-Alesis-box sound, generally speaking). FWIW I never use the 2nd (midiverb II) mode.

Yes! I rarely bother with Mode 2. Mode 1 is fantastic and seems to work more often than not. Like you said: it’s a special pony.

If Mode 1 doesn’t work I usually change reverbs, not modes.
