Funny you should say that. I was going to sell my M3000, had it listed and everything. I hooked it up one more time, only to realise that I can't live without the stereo chorus. Nothing in software comes close, including by TC. I tried them all... Nope, not happening.

So simple to use --true stereo also .. top audio

Plus we have been on this style of effects for 30+ years ... so run them in my sleep..

As a user of most UAD reverbs, Lexicon PCM native bundle, R4, Nimbus, Excalibur, Phoenix, EpicVerb, really for myself, too many verb tools. I feel I have really learned the UAD tools and to an extent the Lexicon, but that's been over many years. The others listed...not so much. It takes a lot of time to genuinely learn them for myself.

However, in my work, I seem to be reaching for this often. It's free, cheap sounding and easy.

I can't help but wonder if there are "better" plugs that specialize on just the sonic results that Abstract Chamber provides? By better I mean more control, more options, but with the same specific objectives that Abstract Chamber achieves. I want reverb that doesn't end, or takes a long time to end.

I would love to see, and maybe demo some comparisons. Maybe R4 or another of my tools listed above gets close. However I haven't found it yet.

Yes, the multiband time multipliers—very quick to take one nice reverb setting and turning it into another one. I programmed a moderately bright reverb I liked, saved it, then did some quick sculpting and had one that was more dark/mellow, and dam, it was working on my voice in the mix really well.

Also, the dynamics—I'm well aware of how to duck a reverb (and have even programmed delay ducking in a plugin, Echo Farm), but having it right there on a tab, I quickly found some really cool ducking that sat in the track nicely and changed the reverb character quick a bit. Nice to have the choice to restrict it to reverb, or the whole wet signal.

I've got a neat Nimbus/Bob Dylan thing to try for the sheer fun of it (not everyone's idea of fun; acknowledged ) ...
The tune is Blind Willie McTell and the Nimbus presets starting point is Henge Vox Slap 1 came out to 80 Tempo. For the fact I'm on a computer with a soundbar at the moment, that sound is what I'd call 3D! Immersive for stereo.

Yes, but Protoverb is so hard to use, and it seems that Urs has abandoned it.

Sigi Welzenbach, the developer of the QRS, said that it's pretty hard to implement the QRS architecture in a plugin. We urged him to work on a plugin, but he refused.

I am looking forward to hearing Relab's take on the QRS!

I recently downloaded Protoverb again, it works. Seems to be an experimental thingy so they can collect what the people use mostly. The UI is very basic, somehow no chance toget under the hood.

I had heard some crazy good QRS examples on YT a year ago and wanted to buy a new device, so contacted the lady and asked to place an order. It looked like its possible to order but since nothing happend. I kind of don’t believe anymore I can order it.

Don’t know if Relab is really working on that or they just meant the algo mode they already provided in Sonsig, which really is sort of QRS emulation. It would be cool if someone who has both th harware QRS and the Sonsig would compare and let us know here.

Apparently it got held up during development for reasons, but from reading between the lines it's still something they are very much hoping to get done, it's just taking longer than expected...

The owner of Quantec has died some years ago, and his wife, who ran the business part of the business, had already established a very bad reputation when he was still alive.

I've got an original QRS in the studio, along with a dead QRS-XL and a Yardstick. All very good reverb units.

As far as I know, Protoverb is no longer being developped further. Urs got so many contradicting feedback about what algos people liked that he couldn't use it, and abandoned the whole project, as far as I have heard.

I understood that argument when I first heard it, I don't know back in the TDM days? Long time ago. Now seeing what developers are able to do I would think it is very possible but is there anyone still around who knows the algorithms and inner workings of the QRS? I imagine it would be difficult to reverse engineer. Maybe that's where Relab is?

In addition to the QRS I always wanted a plugin Publison just because they're so rare and unusual.

I talked to her couple of weeks ago and she said that they still produce and sell Yardstick units. Their current problem per her is supply chain delay but she hopes to resume delivering Yardsticks in February 2022.

If you want Yardstick go through one of the vendors, at least you would have some guarantees. As about when - well, maybe soon enough..

Well, that seems to be positive news. I know of at least one distributor who sued the lady, because the units he had ordered never arrived.

I would definitely buy through a vendor, and only if and when the unit is in stock at the vendor.

Sigi Welzenbach is still around. He played a key role in the development of the original QRS. And he told us it's not really possible to use the principle of the QRS in a plugin.

The way I did it, I went to vendor, paid 10% advance and now waiting. I placed order in July and for how long it is gonna go, i have no idea. But I have one Yardstick already so I could wait.

Nobody had a unit on hand, at least in July, you have to preorder.

If you had to choose between Fab's Pro-R, Valhalla Vintage and Tai Chi as a reverb mainly for (Pop, RnB, Rap-)Vocal-Mixing, what would you guys choose?

I would choose Pro-R for sure, since I am not very fond of chorus and pitch modulation in reverbs (but this applies to my music, not to the genres you mention: I work with classical music only, often with solo classic piano). Pro-R is the cleanest of the three. Tai Chi has a fantastic user interface (really), but has the most chorused and pitch-modulated reverb: I tried the demo and decided not to buy it (and I bought Cinematic Rooms Pro instead, very happy choice for me!). Valhalla Vintage is somehow half-way, but is very versatile, capable of many different kinds of sounds (but none as pure as that of Pro-R, not mentioning Cinematic Rooms). Just my own personal experience, of course. It depends a lot on the kind of music you make.

Did you try Relab Sonsig?It sounds amazing on vocals and instruments.It is somewhat unique by its design,you don't have the usual early reflections/reverb tail setting but once you get used to it you quickly get great results.I like it for small to medium rooms/halls.The authorization is ilok software.
Plate reverbs work well with vocals usually,maybe you should look Valhalla Plate or UVI Plate if they work for you,though the latter might look a bit overkill for a newbie.

I don't know Tai Chi,but VVV or Pro-R are both neat too but I don't use any of them.

The free Valhalla Supermassive is outstanding too for a freeware,clean,rich sounding but ideally from medium to enormous reverbs!

I have cinematic rooms, tai chi, sonsiq and fab r.
As a standard "realistic" reverb i very much prefer cinemativ over fabfilter.
I was a long-term sonsiq fan for effect reverb on synths and stuff until i once stuffed a short percussive sound into it.
Tai chi ate sonsiq for breakfast and was hungry afterwards....

I like Waves IR1/L. Made my own impulses, which was fun. And the rooms it comes with is pretty extensive. I think Avid Space comes with more--I seem to remember seeing a vacuum cleaner tube --but it's also way more expensive.

Acon's free verb works in a pinch.

To my ears, Pro-R has one of the worst reverb vs. cost ratios on the market. I wanted to love it, and tried it more than once. Just never found it worth the money. I wouldn't pay over $30 for it. It's entirely possible that, despite the time I spent, I never really understood how to use it.

I don't find Tai Chi to be chorused at all when chorus is off. It's just a touch thicker than the thinner, more tinny reverbs - like Pro-R (again, to my ears! reverb is so very, very subjective).

I'd recommend Nimbus over Pro-R every single time.

The reverb I'm using the most right now (for vocals) is ReLab 480 Essentials (don't own complete). Cheap (bought it at launch), amazing sound and it's really easy to use. My other fav is Supermassive, but this one is a more "artistic" one.

A modern CPU will run circles around whatever chips they were using for the hardware in the 80s. Initially the developer of the Lexicon PCM bundle didn't think their algos would run well on x86 chips. As the hardware had custom designed Lexicon chips and a DSP processor, that all work very differently to a CPU. But they managed and got it working.

I think that the quest for the "best" <name your processor type> is moot.

But as of late I find Tai Chi appealing (the lite edition - as I have a strong aversion for too many processing options. but that's me) in a way I just can't say about my many (MANY) reverbs (I'm in my honeymoon period, so I'm kinda biased). it's just effortless and luxurious (and well... thick). it is "there" in the most elusive way, one that you come to appreciate when you bypass the plug ("hey, what just happened ??").

But the truth is that we have SO MUCH options nowadays that almost with any given choice of reverb or reverbs combination (eg. Tai Chi + Valhalla Supermassive) - one has the potential to achieve a (very) pleasing reverb effect.

Where to start?

I own a decent amount of verbs, but the four I am using the most and loving are: UA Ocean Way, UA 224, UA Pure Plate, and I am loving my newest one IK Multimedia Sunset Sound.

Those 4 are pretty amazing and it's great trying the stock verbs in any DAW you have as well.

Do you find there is a difference between UA pure plate and UA emt 140 ?

This makes perfect sense. And yet, there are still those who insist the algos run differently, and "better" in dedicated processors. Hardware diehards continue to assert that modern CPUs are still not capable of handling complex reverb algos. Is this true? Not owning any hardware verbs, I can't make a proper judgement.
