Nice. I had the exact same thing ordered but it wouldn't get here for a couple weeks. Then I bought an audient nero monitoring station, which made me realize I picked up the UCX over the babyface for the extra outputs, which I can get via adat with the nero and babyface. So I canceled the order and told myself I'd wait until namm to see if they come out with something else.

I used the "savings" to justify buying more plugins.

BTW, if you want the fizz back, I'm sure you can buy a VST for that

that's quite a journey. yea, i have lots of fizz plugs... it's just so dramatic each level of clarity and takes much getting used to... a good thing, but can be a flow disrupter.

edit... that nero looks sweet... def a good move for multi speaker setups.

Getting my auratones (one of the reasons for upgrade) was one of those jumps for me. Harsh, but necessary. Too bad they moved NAMM back to april this year, I have to be patient and wait to see what is being announced now.

Of course if I see a really good price on a babyface I'll probably buy it and tell myself I can always upgrade later.

I expected worse. Before I got the auratones I was using a small clock radio with an aux in as my "everyman" speaker test. I somehow managed to get surprisingly close to something that would work on the auratones.

When the nero gets here I'll be using my mains + the auratones and that clock radio for the final listens.

How is it working with the RME? Latency any better than the MOTU?

the clock radio is great idea, mono or stereo?... i've been using my ipad pro as the final say and up until they broke, airpods.

the rme is working great... the latency is half of the motu.

I use a sangean RCR10, which is stereo, but I can dump it to mono in the DAW. They make really good radios. The one I have is sort of a good average system - simple bass + treble controls + a bass boost feature so I can switch between how people might be using a system like that - switching between "consumer flat" and "consumer hyped"

I have an old bose wave radio as well but they do so much processing to get the "bose sound" that it's unreliable for testing.

As there are some PA users around here I'd like to ask a question regarding PA plugins.
I am currently demoing some PA plugins.

I like them so far, but I miss the option to save and recall my own user presets.
My plugins from other vendors do have the ability to save and recall user presets.

Is this something specific to PA, or is that more due to the DAW host software (Samplitude in my case)?

I have already tried to ask Plugin Alliance support, but the answer was that they are: "... not here for instructions on how to use plugins, DAWs, or how to be an audio engineer."
Well at least I know that now, to me not exactly the best way to attract a potential customer.

So I hope one of the PA users here will be kind enough to help me with this.

Hopfully my question is not to stupid.
I've been using DAWs and plugins since the mid-90s but this time it seems to be one of those occasions where I just can't figure it out.

Likely the reason for the strange reply I received from PA "support":

You've found one of the bigger issues with PA plugins - not being able to save user presets within the specific plugin. You can still save user presets but you need to use your daw's preset saving system. This happens across all daws so it's not just Samplitube. There is one developer that PA sells and that is Unfiltered Audio. They have the ability to save user presets from the plugin; you don't use your daw's system.

I own a lot of saturation plugins... Kelvin, Tupe, HG-2, UAD Neve/Culture Vulture, Satin, all sorts. My favourites are IK Saturator X and Newfangled Saturate.

Is P42 offering anything new?

The thread is like 50 pages long though. So, FWIW here is my 2 cents (And I say this because subjectivity is a weird thing and some people have exactly the opposite opinion as me on this plugin. It has generated controversy).

It is almost the only saturation plugin I use anymore. The single thing it does that I haven't heard others do is (and I have heard hardware do) is give the saturation a sparkly aliveness (I'm not good at this). If you hear it like I do, you will hear it immediately and it is not subtle. The nature of the saturation along with the shelf filters and air band (and OS) make this extremely versatile and just a Swiss army knife signal prepper before you feed your channel strip or EQ or compression. It is first in line on pretty much every channel always for the last year. AND the CPU hit is like 'is this thing on?' Very minimal. Also, P42 recently added an infrasonic filter that tightens up the bass image some.

Prior to P42 my favorites were Tupe, Blyss, the Kush transformers and HG-2. I don't regret the money spent on this one at all ever.

I’m really liking p42 but am not sure it’s the must have others claim it to be. It’s really good, but so are so many of the other options we have. I haven’t personally done any kind of shoot out.

P11 Abyss though, I am totally caught up in the hype. It sounds incredible, is very versatile, and is so easy to work with (after perusing the manual). After getting my head around the extra controls in Abyss (PSI, O2, Soul) I knew I didn’t want to mix without it.

Yes, thats true - boost only, which is a shame. And yes also, post saturation. That one hasn't really bothered me in practice, but it would be fun to play around with more options. I agree with @ Bemore - P11 abyss is also really nice. I did a side by side with Tiger and came away with Abyss winning almost every round.

Seems like a good channel strip then! Abyss doesn't appeal in quite the same way, i'm a Fircomp devotee and also recently got the Massenburg which is great. Acustica can get in the bin as we say over here

Ah, nice. Yes, I love the Fircomp as well. I bought Abyss, which isn't cheap, so I'm not even demoing the new Massenberg until I recoup a little bit. I've been following that thread and I know the end of that story for me... Looks like a unique and tasty bit.

as mentioned, i came from a motu ultralite avb, which has a very complex and flexible internal routing and software matrix... for me the totalmix software is a cakewalk in comparison... better looking UI, better fx, better layout, more ways to configure and save the layout, etc... and the led screen on the rme is a big step up from the avb as well... but what i'm finding most impressive is the sound... much cleaner and clearer, which kinda freaked me out at first.

I actually think this is totally inexcusable and PA should be absolutely ashamed of themselves by this glaring omission.


Again, totally inexcusable. It is a more than fair query ......we've all been caught out at some point when we have realised that the preset function is useless and think we must be doing something wrong.


The only stupid thing here is PA's lack of a usable preset system.

The saturation can be moved pre or post EQ on P42 Climax. I do use the EQ to do some pre-saturation emphasis and it works very well. I use P42 and Abyss on all my projects. They are very organic sounding.

Also, for saturation, P565 Siren is amazing and has a much bigger gain range than P42 Climax. The drive can be moved pre/post filters, but it has more filters/types and cut/boost. Sounds great doing filtering, but I think one of the most overlooked features on it is the saturation. I use P42 more for subtle mixing purposes and Siren for designing really tuned and specific drive for guitar/bass/drums/synth.

Thanks for the post. I can’t find any specific mention of the saturation before or after EQ in the manual, only the toggle switch changing the saturation position to the ‘beginning of the signal path’ or immediately before the main output gain. Is it this you’re referring to or is there some other option? Cheers

Yes, those input/output square buttons on either side of the Saturation knob move the transformer saturation location. You can just think of its structure as (input) (input saturation location) (filters) (output saturation location) (output).

For just the reasons you mention, I like to switch between locations because of the interaction of the saturation with EQ. I've got another video on my channel (a long one) dealing with how I use P42 if anyone is interested. It is 49 minutes long, lol, and does have demo songs included.

One nice thing is that I'm more and more investing in getting to know fewer plugins, but much deeper. Having tools like these, which are versatile and sound good have been helping the gear acquisition. I'm able to work faster and get better results. Still always working on the art of it though.

Siren sounds so good to me that I just had to get it. Since it began to feel inevitable I went ahead and got the other two as well; Lunar Lander and P914 FFB.
