I've had my 003 rack for about 6 years now and it hasn't had issues, more or less.

In the last couple of weeks though, I find that after a period of time left on (normally 20-30 mins) the recorded input with start to glitch out, beginning at first with what sounds like scratchy static, building up to a kind of bit-crushed digital distortion. This is definitely through a recorded input, so anything recorded gets this horrid sound on it.

I've been working around it by periodically switching it off/on and relaunching pro tools. Anyone else experience this?

If so, suggestions?

Is it time for some new gear?

If so, any suggestions on replacing a digi rack workflow? I want to stick with Pro Tools but I'm happy to explore the world of interfaces available for current pro tools, comparable to my old digi rack system (which until now I've really enjoyed and found very reliable).

What's the status on hardware updates for the digirack? Would you advise doing that? I am currently running Pro Tools 8.0.5.

Tom, is this happening with all the inputs or just one?

Have you ruled out any outboard gear? This resembles an issue I had with a power supply on an outboard compressor that was slowly burning out. Took forever to diagnose, but everything was fine in the end.

It's happening with all the inputs, and so far it doesn't seem to be outboard gear - meaning it's the inputs on the 003 which exhibit the trouble. I have not yet tried isolating the 003 from all the other gear in terms of power which is feeding it (so I wouldn't know if it has to do with a power supply).

My 002 has a headphone outlet. If the 003 does, too, I would also listen to the headphone jack when it is glitching. Not sure exactly what that might mean, but it could help narrow the possibilities.

Appreciate the suggestion. But yeah, it comes through both the headphones and speaker outlets. It's printing this distorted sound to audio - it's happening on the way in somehow.

Possibly the power supply starting to fail, or internal connectors have oxidized, something which the 002 suffered from. With the 003 switched off and unplugged, remove the top cover and try carefully unplugging and replugging any ribbon cables and power cables from the boards.

I am having this same problem. All inputs will record distorted audio. The curious thing is that listening through headphones (headphone jack) or speakers (stereo output) in real time, the sound is good (using "Listen to this device")

So when I record, it's distorted. Also, when I monitor through Reaper it's distorted.

Do you think it's the Digi003 or may be the firewire card? I don't really know what to do. It started happening today, after I tried to record a condenser mic with or without Phantom Power. Initially I had the mic plugged to a mixer (which has phantom). The mixer was plugged to one of the inputs in my Digi003. It recorded distorted. Then I tried plugging the mic directly to the Digi003 and same thing.

Any help is really appreciated; I got this interface about 2 months ago second hand and I have been loving it so far.

Ok, I reply to myself:

After hours of trying many things, I got the feeling it was happening when using ASIO. I ended up uninstalling and installing the drivers again.

At first it didn't work.
I continued tweaking, trying to change the buffer size with Centrance Latency tool, and in the end I uninstalled again the drivers. Restarted. Switched Digi003 Rack off and on (otherwise it's not seen by Windows), installed the drivers again (latest). Launched Centrance, set buffer to 1024 (leaving that window as it is, with the combobox in 1024 without accepting), launched Cakewalk, recorded: ALL GOOD.

I aged 5 years in a couple hours... But at least it's (maybe) not a hardware issue. I hope I won't have to come back here and nobody else luckily.

Update:

After 10 minutes of clear recording, the issue came back by itself, without touching or changing anything. It has to be a hardware problem.

I'll check it inside, although I have no big hopes.
