Sorry, but the 103 sounds NIGHT AND DAY better in this clip. The B-1 is thin and nasally sounding, and completely lacks warmth and body, just as I expected it to be. Now that you have a decent preamp, your next upgrade should definitely be your mic.

Sorry, but I disagree. To me, listening through my Shure SRH440 headphones, the 103 sounds muddy and less defined, as opposed to the B-1 which has more clarity and sparkle.

Okay, I just tried that and I'm still of the opinion that the Behringer sounds better. The 103 sounds like more like the AT2035 but with more presence. I'd be incredibly disappointed to have paid what that Neumann costs for that kind of muddy performance. Granted, the Behringer is a bit harsher on the highs, but I find that's easily tamed with a de-esser plugin.

This is probably just a taste thing. I've always liked a bit more treble in the audio than most. Maybe I should have been born Japanese. heh

FWIW, I too very much think the 103 is significantly better than the B1 in that clip.
But, by all means, if you are satisfied with the B1, go ahead and make music.

Apparently he likes the sound of thin, tinty sounding 99 dollar Chinese mics completely devoid of midrange. To each his own I guess.

The point is that the B-1 is not thin. The AT2035 is thinner, even though it's more than twice the price. Since putting the B-1 through the Onyx preamp it is full-bodied with a lot of clarity, and deals with the lower harmonics of my baritone voice much better.

After I sell the AT2035 I will likely, at sometime in the future, take a closer look at the SE Electronics mics, or even the AT40 series.

Which is cleaner, quieter?

I'd choose the D-pre over onyx without question. Whether or not the Yamaha is rugged enough to travel with is another issue.

Yep, have owned both 1200f and MR816 and used them in the same context. I can't say enough good things about the Yamaha pre's.

Steinberg is Yamaha. They preamps in the MG06 and MR816 are identical designs.
