I know that the behringer DDX3216 is a very old mixer but since I have now one to do some foldback mixes, I was wonder if (and how) can I setup Nuendo (3.1) to use the DDX3216 as controller.

I can't find any device map for the DDX3216

Also, in the official behringer page the list the last firmaware as 1.09 but is this topic: Behringer DDX3216 presets request PhireAlly posted a 1.12 firmware. Any idea?

Being an nut about the DDX ,the last version is 1.12 ,which only updates it for 5.1 surround sound
And is available on thier website !@note@ back up your existing system via the file exchange software first though.

Contemplated setting one up as a controller but I now use it for tracking
straight into an HD24 via ADAT (2x ADAT 1616)...So i cant really help there,
To busy at the mo to even try !!
I belive it can be done but you probably will have to midi map it yourself.
P53 54 in the manual.
Mine (have 2 and enough spares for a lifetime) are now totally modded.
PSU recapped/upgraded, and all analogue in/outs with upgraded opamps/caps.
I Mostly just use the inserts from my outboard pres though.
A very underated desk esspecialy when modded with top grade components.
Have a ton of info on these desks ,and couldnt do without them for the price,
There is nothing out there that even comes close to the versatility that
This desk can achive !
Play with the midi and see if you can suss it out,would like to know ,

Ok I made it work with the attached .xml file.

1. Go to the Device Setup dialog in the Devices menu.
2. Select Remote Devices
3. Add a New Generic Device
4. Import the xml file.

After that you have the first 16 Ch Linked (you can linked more if you want), also the 4 DDX's Aux Send and 4 FX Send controls the 8 sends of the track selected in Nuendo.

I changed a little bit the map so I use the DDX's Fader and #32 as a control for level and pan of any channel selected in Nuendo.

I have one of these mixers and use it every day (well, every day that I find enough time to get into my hobby studio). It really isn't an ideal DAW controller for at least one reason....the mute buttons' midi output is a little funny and can't really be utilized to manage the DAW's mutes. Other than that, with a bit of work, it can control most other basic functions in Samplitude at least. The "mute" problem is a almost a deal breaker though (at least for me).

mmm I didn't tried the mute/solo button, I will tomorrow If I had the time. I really just wanted to control the sends and volume so I can "play" and record the level of them.

How does your mic pres sound now that you have modified them? That was the main reason I sold my mixer. Other than that, I really like the mixer.

How hard was it to upgrade the mic-pres?

i have the ddx3216 and can't seem to make it work properly with ableton, it is receiving and sending midi info. i can see the midi in/out leds blink on the ESI RomI/O (that's how i connected it) and i can midi assign manually the faders, but i want the ddx faders to be automated in sync with my live project.

help would be much appreciated

Well they have a much better SNR and a definate better quality.
Using NE5532's ,a vast improvement on the standard JRC opamps,but as I said I basicaly upgraded them for the insert path which I use mostly With my outboard DIY SSL9K and API pres to ADAT
This has raised the bar of the mixers quality by a large factor,for my use anyway.

Not an easy upgrade for a novice ,experienced electronic skills are a
Required to pull this off ,along with a lot of patience and time !

Now got a third one repaired, which will be fitted with the LME49720 opamps.

Well is not TOO much difficult I think unless the opamps are glued to the board (Beringer likes to do this!)

Could you explain more about the power supply upgrade ?
Did you do it yourself, or could you say who did it and how much?
( I'm in the U.K )

Mine is out of action, I was getting a worrying burnt metal kinda smell on turning it on, and occassional crackly glitches in the audio which I'd never had before in the previous four years of daily use.
A bit of reading on Yahoo groups showed often its the power supply needing recapping that's first to go, but I havent done anything about it yet, in part for not knowing who could fix it , or whether I could afford it .

Any advice would be appreciated.

Forgot to ask , did you change the fan I wonder ? That was my complaint about the mixer. That and the fact that the 16 Direct Output channels were also referred to as Busses, but they didnt sum back to the stereo.

Yes you need a psu recap,and if you're a newb to electronics don,t attempt
to try yourself, get a qualified tech to look at it for you,there are lethal voltages
Inside the SMPSU...and if you make a mistake you will end up doing a lot of
Damage and be the proud owner of a pile of scrap,
I Am sure if you contact Behringer they will point you to a service centre,
In your area.

Direct outs are what they say they are..., Direct outs, for recording direct to
a digital or tape 16 track machine....
It was never designed to be a SUMMING mixer.!

Thanks for replying. If anyone can recommend a service centre in the Uk I'd be grateful, although it may end up on ebay for parts.

Direct outs are direct outs ,yes, except it says "16 bus " on the box ! and makes many references in the manual to these "busses". I bought the mixer assuming I could use these busses as subgroups for drums/ backing vocals etc., but they dont sum to stereo so you have to waste extra inputs to route the busses back in.

Other than that and the fan, I liked the mixer and miss its workflow. I'm back forgetting what page is which on my old ( but trustier ) Yamaha 01v.

As for the busses ,DDX3216's do not as such have stereo busses .
You can configure 8 STEREO BUSSES to main outs using the "pair" function.
With 16 Routed channels 1-16 .........Panned 1-L 2-R 3-L 4-R...or use the pair function.

Take time and study the block diagram in the manual.......?
As for "what it said on the box" it does what it says on the box...reasearch before buy.
Also the main + potential for this mixer is not realised until 2x ADAT 16 cards are installed,
And used with an ADAT recorder ie The Alesis HD24.


The fans are simple items to change and use standard parts.

I am trying to use the ddx3216 as a controller for cubase vst/32.
I downloaded the ddx3216 zip file posted above,
In setup devices, tried to import in the generic devices setup window.
No luck..
This is a zip file.
Am I supposed to unzip and import the file opened..?

I realize this is an older post but I'd really like to hear some music recorded and or mixed through a Behringer DDX3216 especially one that has been moded. Also any video of your studio using it as well. Thanks
