Wow! I followed your long thread (here or on another site) about modding the VTB1 and after all that you sold it! I will likely get a DMP3 and get the JJ mod at some point. However, I picked up a VTB1 very cheap on ebay. I'll mod it by upgrading the tubes and opamps. Does anyone have the pdf of the Black Lion mod?
Yeah this thing is a paper weight. I don't like it at all but I knew my 100 bucks wasn't going far. Its in storage when there is one half rack slot left it will go in.
I like my vtb-1's.They're not expensive but I've found plenty of uses for them. I love driving the tube for vox and guitar direct in sometimes...
I just ordered the bb opamps suggested earlier in the thread...
I had the VTB1 in my simple home-setup. Used it less then 5 hours before I decided to sell it. It didn't sound that bad but it didn't sound better then the preamp in my interface either (T.C. Desktop connect 6), and the tube blend just sounded bad IMO. I saved up and got a True Systems P-solo insted and never looked back. Big improvment.
For a colored sound for cheap I rekommend the GAP Pre73. I have a pair in my studio and they sound awesome.

- What do you like better about the P-Solo?
- Are the GAPs modded or stock with the Chinese components? I've been thinking about getting myself some but was unsure if I'd need to get the mods or not.

The True Systems pres are a totally different universe than the VTB-1s. I purchased a P2-Analog a few years ago and immediately sold my pair of VTB-1s (The P-Solo is a single channel version of the P2-Analog). The VTB-1 is quite good for the money but the True pres are genuine high-end - amazing clarity and openness, superior transient response, build quality is exceptional. They are clean but not sterile in my view, and sound good on anything. This was one of my best investments.
Just to be clear, I paid $80 on ebay for a like new VTB1. Also, as I mentioned before, I am looking for something that can give me some tube distortion, similar to tape saturation. Not a lot, just a slight "bite". One of techie friends is going to help me upgrade the op amps to the ones that Allan Hyatt reccomends.
The Pre-73 does look interesting though. I'll keep my eyes open for a used one.
Hey guys... an inexpensive upgrade for the VTB-1 would be to change the opamp on U1, U2, U5 and U6 to OPA2134PA Not hard to do if you can solder.
Personally, the VTB1 inside is very well designed. The 90V starved tube plate is a real tube plate design...we just starve the plate so we do not have to use 300V to 350V.(that costs money)
Sure we did a lot of stuff to bring it in for a price, but it has so many features on it that I do not think there is another unit that has as much in its price class.
The unit has three outputs. XLR and 1/4, which are all effected by the tube, but you can use the insert as an output which is right after the hi-pass filter and not effected by the tube. This way, you can blend all three outputs if you want.
At the end of the day, it is what it is. 50% like Vanilla, and 50% like Chocolate.
Anyway, you might want to do this upgrade as its adds another dimension to the sound of the mic. Makes it very nice.....
I still believe the VTB-1 is a good entry-level value and makes a good ribbon mic preamp - lots of clean and quiet gain when used with the tube feature dialed out.
A nice step up from the VTB-1 is the Black Lion Audio "Auteur" ($495) it is 2ch, transformer-coupled and has a lowered measured noise floor than the AEA Ribbon Mic Preamp ($868) making it a really great ribbon mic preamp in addition to its fine performance with condensers and moving coil dynamic mics as well.
With the Auteur you get a handbuilt-in-the-USA boutique preamp with transformers for just about twice the price / channel of the VTB-1.
, so it also can serve double duty toning down
brightish and/or sssibilant voice/mic match ups. Perhaps that's a factor why
Chris
haha!
It's a good thing you're watching out for ssibilance. You know, sssome people inssist on sspeaking right into the mike with ssloppy pronunciation, an it gets to the point where you can't ssssssssstand it.
Hi Alan. I may pick up a VTB-1 soon primarily for my EV 635a to add "weight" to the
tone.
Merry XMas to you and everyone else BTW.
Chris
Hey! How did THAT worked last decade? I have a EV 636 Slimair for male vocals and acoustic guitar, and I could use your experience on that. I am thinking on getting the preamp. Thanks!
Hey guys, I know those posts are quite old! But I'm thinking to get a VTB1 for my vocals in live situations, would you still recommend that? I would like to give some saturation to my voice. Would you recommend other preamp now?
I have a VTB-1 βsomewhereβ.
Itβs a nice Pre.
And a βCritter of itβs timeβ.
But Hornet has a more refined Saturation.
(Stock VTB-1 was based on Chineseum Tube)
PM Bushman. I almost was buying his.
But ended up getting the NAMM demo unit.
(Not sure where youβre located/maybe you guys can figure something out)

I'm in France, i actually see a bunch of vtb1 second hand online for 80 euros. Hornet seems like a nice brand but hard to find in france I believe.. and more expensive. Would you say that the VTB1 is better than the presonus tube pre V2?

Michaelβs post here was βState of the Artβ back then.
Also for FREEβ¦
Try the MJUCjr. (Vari-Mu) Compressor Plug.
That will help.

Thanks for all of that! I'll try to get myself a vtb-1! And i'm thinking to get also a JoeMeek ThreeQ as a compressor. I actually have the plugin MJUCJR, but i want to buy preamps for live concerts
I still own a racked pair that lives in my guitar-centric rack. I have been using them as DI's for close to a decade, now. I upgraded the toobs back when I actually believed that it might help. Even my advanced confirmation bias failed to convince me of any improvement, so it remained a good pair of DI-s for years. They were on the "sell-for-rack-space" shortlist, the next time space was needed.
As I was building the mic locker, and ribbons began to arrive, the humble VTB's suddenly became relevant, again. They had more clean gain available than I had given them credit for. I don't use the toob. They actually attained prominence when many of my "better" ($) pre's were found wanting when matched with ribbon mics.
So they remain in the guitar rack. Ugly, blu-glo, ungainly apparitions that looked DIY right from the factory.
Cute as toads, but I am keeping mine.
