Hey all, I'm working on a MidiHumanizer plugin that adjusts the velocities of the drum to sound like a real drummer. Unlike other humanizing plugins, it does not only randomize the velocities but uses velocity curves like a real drummer would do while playing. I thought the "after" was a great improvement over the straight MIDI. If you are drawing in your drums, this plugin will be a help. Being free is also a help.


I do however, have a pet peeve about using the terms "randomizing" and "humanizing" interchangeably .

Human timing and dynamics is not merely imperfect (off the grid) - it always has a slight bias. And in a good drummer, that bias is towards groove and swing. Might be too much to ask from a plugin, but a real human might trend towards slightly higher velocities on downbeats. Might be consistently "on top" on the 1's and consistently "back in the pocket" on the 4's. i.e. not truly random.

This is possible with the plugin. The velocities are changed relative to the actual played velocities. So, suppose you set lower velocities for HiHat/Cymbals and higher velocities for Snare and Kick. In that case, both will be affected by the plugin, but with different ratios based on their initial velocities.

This is exactly what the plugin does. By controlling the Intensity knob, you get to control how velocities are changed in the real way a drummer would change velocities depending on the current beat.
The random knob introduces the traditional velocities changes that are done in the other midi humanizing plugins.

So if you turn that dial all the way down, it is possible to run your program with no randomization, and just these other features? How does it determine how the velocities are changed? Are there 'rules' that get applied? Let's say with a simple roll. Are the 'right' hands slightly louder than the 'lefts'? That kind of thing?

What about timing? Do you use 'swing' or 'groove quantize' sorts of things?

If you turn the Intensity knob down the effect will be completely removed and if you turn the randomization knob to zero (default value) there will be no randomization.

And for the way the program works for the Intensity knob, it kind of follows some sort of rules.
Basically, the drum uses the current beat info to determine how much to change the velocity. Example: First beat is 100% of the velocity, 2nd beat 80%, 3rd beat is 90% and 4th beat 70%. But try imagining that up till the 16th note division.

As for swing, and groove quantize I was thinking of putting a setting for that in the future.

Coming back to this, I tried, but it is an .exe file, so Windows only (at this point, at least) while I'm on Mac, so I wasn't able to play around with it. Looks like a useful utility for Windows users, though.

Yeah, unfortunately I haven't made builds for macOS (Still trying to figure that out for the moment).
