EQ is important too. Learning how to take harsh frequencies out and then decorate with nice frequencies...in order to make something 'sound' good.
Great advice. Music first! I've spent almost all of my time until now writing and playing, finally getting in to making it sound better than the basic recordings I was doing.
Speaking of EQ, I was thinking about de-essers a couple days ago. I used one on a podcast mixer I have, worked great. I started reading up a little on accomplishing it with a standard EQ (if that's possible). My acoustic, for example, sounds big and bold (I run it's built-in EQ flat), so I've got a couple of good reasons already to get acquainted.

For sure, I'm open to expand my horizons. I actually thought about it when messing with the 172 earlier, that I don't have any experience with other types. After the 172, I threw on the channel compressor of the X32 mixer to see the differences it made.
Any recommendations on something solid in that style to start with?
The reason for the Bluey is mostly just that I wanted to try more stuff before settling on what I feel suits my voice best. Black Lion told me that it was great for vocals in particular. I figure I can put it to use moving forward either way.
