Received my KT 1176 today. Don't have much experience or knowledge to compare or contrast but it has improved the sound of my vocals when I use it for tracking. Very upfront yet smooth. Gonna spend more time learning it and adapting it to suit my needs.

Was playing around with different settings and tried to do the "All button" mode that I've read about but wasn't able to with mines. Does the Klark 1176 allow that? I was only able to get 3 buttons in at once, but not four. One would always pop back out.

I can get all buttons mode on mine, so keep trying! It should work

You know...you guys have about 50 ****ing samples of compressors on there and they're all using those crap sounds. So, they all sound like crap....even tho the compressor are good?

It's probably closer to 100 compressors, all tested using the same DAW and converter and even cables for over 8 years at this point...and those audio samples are challenged dynamically and were chosen so you could...oh I don't know...hear the ****ing things compress.

I've heard other dealers do one off tests with tracks that sound finished before applying compression, and I personally want to hear what they do and I want to compare it 100% to the next one. Our female vocal for example, I specifically chose that section because it has a 25dB dynamic range swing that some compressors pinch...some fail to control very well...and others level it like there's no tomorrow.

IF you're not smart enough to listen to the action of the compressor and compare units, and think it should be like tuning in a radio station, I would suggest you stay off our Clipalator so you're not so triggered or wasting our bandwidth, let alone anybody's time.

My Klark 1176 is making a crackling and static sound every so often :(....sometimes its so often its unbearable and I have to turn it off for about 2 mins to make it stop. Other times it's random and comes in for about 10 secs and wont happen for another 30 or 40 mins.

I clicked to listen to the units, but then found I couldn't listen? ...or, I couldn't focus on the compression because I couldn't tolerate the samples....

All of the product info reads "fet-style" compresser.

Is the KT-76 a true FET or a VCA or otherwise ??

Hello, Jason @ Revive here, Just adding to this thread since we came up.

As to the comments on the KT, We feel they are basically pretty on par with each other but with different color. The Warm uses the Cinemags which have a nice low mid bump and pretty much are responsible for the WARM in most Warm audio gear. The KT's are a bit cleaner and sound flatter.
The Warm uses a linear PSU (old school power supply) which tend to send a bit dirtier but more dynamic in use with circuits.
The KT has aa Auto- switching PSU which is clean and fairly flat in how it responds to amperage demands from the circuit and so sounds as such.

As to the SMD question someone "quoted us" as saying. Our years of experience repairing SMD work (20 years on my side) as well as modifying units is that SMD does not last as long and once it comes up for repair, well often is toast.

What we have seen:SMD components do not hold up to temp, voltage spikes duration of use etc and when in need of repair, can often be un-repairable where thru hole can easily be serviced.
There are a number of reasons for it, but those of us techs know them.

As to sound quality differences there are subtle ones as well but mostly it comes down to quality of components.
SMD is also prone to lots more cold solder joints.

Our M76 is all Mil Spec, built to last and we haven't heard anything that can touch it save a vintage Revision with a full re-cap, but heh all we do is sell snake oil

I realize there are a lot of folks who dont trust modifiers but every NEW design is a modification of a previous OLD one so.....for what its worth.

Checking one of these out at the shop and so far I think it sounds really good. Works really well, but certainly Cleaner than old units. Similar compression to my ears. Good build quality. I am eagerly awaiting the KT-2A box to arrive.

i got 2 of those killer cheap, pre owner had no idea what to do. using it as my main vocal comp in connection with analog desser on the last record. work absolutely fantastic, a real BUY!!! even for the streeprice it is worth buying. it has not that much bite as the original 1176, but killer smooth and perfect sounding. if you need an 1176 sound, buy it, its very close! handling is great and even the hardware feels very good. better then my 1178........

From many reports, the KT is well engineered. It also has an iec cable, not a wall wart.

That's not undercut your competition cheap, that's a slap your competition in the face cheap.. I might pick up a pair myself.! I mean why not?

I own two of them and like them. They remind me of the blue stripe in the way of its fidelity, but cleaner. I've have been thinking about adding the utc input transformer, and switch between if I need that dirty saturation that comes from that. But these things are so reasonable, I could get another pair and replace the input with the UTC.

The surface mount technology isn't a minus. I should open one up and give my opinion of their construction. But I should save that for a review.

yes @ reviveaudio there is some smt technology that shouldn't be applied to touring equipment. One example of this is the ball grid array style IC. Even though they improved the solder formula for the infra-red soldering, it is still susceptible to thermal shock. If they use the proper gauge of copper foil in the pc board, you shouldn't have part replacement issues if you know how to use hot tweezers.

They are probably not using high end surface mount devices, but its not hard to fix that. Its just if you can justify the $300 in parts (estimation based on a 1176 surface mount build I made from a hand made pc board I made with high end surface mounts). The KT-1176 a little bit noisier when cranking up the input in comparison, but still, for an OEM build that is built for a low budget. Its well worth it.

Definitely 10 year warranty on the Klark boxes.

Has anyone here tried both the KT-76 and KT-2A? How do they compare regarding noise?

I'm leaning towards the KT-2A at the moment. I've also noticed that the Klark Teknik EQP-KT is down to £181 as well!! Wonder why all of these have had such big price drops?

They speculate about the same thing on Behringer synths. Lots of theories but I'm guessing it has something to do with the looming trade war.

I have both. Actually I have 2 EQPs as well. All great units. 76 has more control, better for faster transients. 2A for overall levelling. Just like the real ones. 76 is fairly clean sounding, bit of mojo with the 2A. I’ve never heard a real 2A but my UAD LA2A mkii plug-in gray unit sounds almost the same as the KT2A. I’d give the nod to the kt for vibe. That said, the UAD plugs are excellent. I imagine the price drop is due to Music Group’s cost/unit going down as they have their own manufacturing city in China as well as an aggressive marketing drive. Can’t say I mind.

I got them all. Kt-76, kt-2a and the eqp-kt. I love them all equaly!
