Free things to do are general rock'n'roll site-seeing tour.
Always worth walking across the Abbey Road crossing, it's a pleasant walk from the West End across Regents park, weather dependent. If you're a Beatles fan then you can loop back around Macca's house. In fact, stacks of good Beatles London spots.
The Ziggy phone box - and the site of the old Trident studios ...etc.
Obviously a walk along the South Bank and Buck Palace are worth doing. Kids will love Hamley's toy store on Regents Street (near Oxford Circus) but that gets expensive quickly.
Depends on the age of the kids but most museums and galleries are FREE.
National Gallery in Trafalgar Square
Science Museum/Natural History Museum/V&A - all in Kensington.
British Museum in Bloomsbury
For some of these you can prebook online and skip some of the inevitable queues (lines for you in the USofA!)]
If you get the hang of the Tube (the Underground) then it opens up more options than just going on foot - there are various family ticketing options and it's really, really good so get stuck in
enjoy
