Chess does have a physical component. It can be exhausting to function at a high mental level for hours on end, knowing that one mistake can ruin your game and (on a professional level) perhaps cost you thousands of dollars.
Because of this, young people have a real advantage over older people in chess. Also, many grandmasters undergo serious physical training to increase their stamina.
I've competed in dozens of chess tournaments, and have always come away totally drained...physically, mentally, and emotionally.
