For the folks pondering tracking/OD work flow...

The simplest way to do it is to use a mult on your patch bay. I get the same thing by using the sends on my MH boxes. I always monitor the un-PEP signal, but record unprocessed (using the MH converters) and the PEP track. Once you're finished tracking, put all the PEP tracks in a group (I'm working in PT), zoom in and make the latency adjustment, comparing unprocessed and PEP waveforms. Takes 30 seconds. Obviously, you need to record the unprocessed/non-PEP track so you can have a reference for aligning the PEP tracks, but, hey, disk space is cheap, and I like to compare once in a while to make sure I like the PEP track vs the unprocessed track.

Same thing for overdubbing - monitor your input unprocessed, record both, align PEP tracks in groups.

This probably seems kludge-y to read about, but it works well and once your record template and patchbay is set up, you don't have to think much about it.

Anyone else have any opinions about the DA8-V? I'm super interested in idea of using this converter into a summing mixer as a means of de-digitising music, as it is being produced in the software realm.

My experience with the DA8-V is that the stereo field is wide, deep, and in your face. Its analog output is very robust. I have a B80 Mothership as well, and I can say without hesitation that the JCF outshines it. Not by a huge margin (Burl is amazing), but I notice the difference.

Yes, it has eight channels of analog input, which feed 8 channels of digital outputs

AES channels are Stereo. So 4 XLR outs = 8 channels

No, it is two channels down one wire and is inherent to the AES format.

The apollo 8xp has adat connections for 8 channel digital, from what I can tell. If the JCF Audio AD8 is AES only, you will need some type of adat to aes digital conversion box. I have two apollo x16s I use to feed a 32 channel capi sumbus but am looking to improve my AD ... If I was to use two AD8s to do this would I be able to feed 4 channels into the two 16xs to track with UAD effects in monitor mode and the remaining channels thro a HDSPe AES? And clock everything off the AD8?

I’ll try the question a diff way haha… can you send AES outputs in a single interface to two separate digital inputs? Or does that cause a conflict?

I agree with much of what has already been said regarding the JCF's.

I've owned the DA8T, DA8V, AD8's since they first came out and have used them on countless albums and songs (mixing and tracking).

The AD8's are big, open and have weight. Tracks recorded through them have clear high end without any hype or digital grain, the mids are meaty and textured and the bottom just sounds right -I wouldn't call it tight or loose -bass and kick just work in the mix really well. I won't go back to a conventional AD when tracking, things just sound less interesting and smaller without the JCF's.

I use the DA8V tube and DA8T solid state DA's along with the two AD8's for hybrid mixing -drums, vocals, bass, guitars etc go out to the analog gear and back in the AD8's. Going through the DA>AD loop ads no noticeable digital grain or digital degradation, but things get even "bigger" due to all the tubes and transformers. I don't really think of them as converters but rather a 16 channel tube/transformer console that feeds my analog gear.

As far as the debate of whether converters should be neutral vs adding color all I can say is that any time I've tried swapping back to conventional converters (say Lynx Aurora, Apogee Symphony, Benchmark DAC, Dangerous DAC etc), I've much preferred the JCF's which is why I continue to use them after 20 years. They add something, but really, every converter does something to the sound, so given that fact I much prefer what the JCF's do.

Having said that, the only place in the chain I prefer a more conventional AD converter is when printing the stereo mix back to digital (after the analog bus comp etc). It's just the way I ride the horse; with the JCF's and outboard gear (and some plugins) I can get the mix where I like it and at that point, depending on the desired end result I either go to analog 2 track for a vintage tape vibe or lock in the mix as is with a Lavry Gold

sadly died a while back -apparently the circuit boards fry themselves after a while and Lavry won't repair them, uggh! So now it's a $7k gold door stop! I am experimenting with replacement AD's for the mix.

I find the prism is good in a pinch for printing...
I won't track anything without my JCF though!

I m looking at the jcf adi-8, but it's only an A to D converter, so I wonder if it is possible to mix with it, I mean not recording stuff but hearing what my vst's sound like into it, do you think it is possible in any way? Again I know it is designed to record, but I this video I ve Seen with Marc Daniel Nelson (mixing like a pro), he seems to put a whole miw into the adi8 to hear how it sounds like..

Can anyone tell just how noisy are the Da8-V fans ?

I thought the Latte sounded very good, but I still slightly preferred my Pacific Microsonics HDCD Model 2.

The fan on the back of the main chassis is quiet. The fans that are in the analog power supply unit are louder, but not very noisy, IMO. Some may disagree. I do have the PS behind a door in a closet so that I don't much hear anything.
