Atc scm25 mk2 & hedd bass 08 (one or two)
Anybody using this combination? I went thru all the "which sub for atc scm25" threads but am particularly interested in that one since most of the recommendations in those threads are either out of my budget or not available for demo where i live (switzerland)

Also thought about the neumann kh750, but feeling like a lot of their price is the dsp which i don't need (got myself a nova last year )

Any other recs in this pricerange that are available thru thomann?

Are you sure you really need the sub?

No, that's why it is important for me to be able to test it in my studio and send it back if i don't like / need it. While i CAN mix perfectly fine with my setup, i still miss some low-frequency bump when mixing hiphop / pop. It's hard for me to judge the 50-60hz region because of the roll of and most of the time i end up overdoing it down there. Also, there's a 80hz floor bounce sbir (-5db) in my room which i am hoping to get rid of.

That SBIR is also the reason why i can't just bump up the bass-boost on my atc or target curve on teinnov, because while the rest of the lf-spectrum gets louder, the 80hz stay exactly where they are and a more uneven spectrum is the result.

I doubt the hedd will work (not because it’s not good, but) because it has a dsp in it, so that’s not what you really want ideally (although I don’t know if you’ll be able to notice the delay on the dsp on the sub, but I imagine so).

The Sky Audio Verdade Sub is passive so it needs a separate amp, this could be a very nice fit to the atc’s, especially if you have a decent amp laying around.. this is very high quality stuff.

The Geithain basis 11k is a sub that should be “analog”..
you’ll need to find a sub that doesn’t use dsp, and these days is not so easy unfortunately.. I don’t know if they have a distribution in Switzerland though..

Another solution is to ask Abacus if they can kindly build you a subwoofer without dsp..at the moment all of their subs are also dsp based (they’re now distributed by MGM audio in Switzerland afaik). They’re a small company, maybe they’ll do it.. who knows.

Although you might want to look for a sealed cabinet subwoofer which will pair well with the atc's (maybe someone worth its salt can build you one?), I've been in some rooms where they had whatever, and it worked for the intended purpose.

I don’t use a sub with my 25’s for mixing.. but the room plays a big role, also depends what you want/need obviously.

First of, thank you for your answer and suggestions and sorry for taking so long to reply.

Unfortunately, the subs you recommended are out of budget for now or not possible to test in my studio.

I think one can't bypass the dsp on the hedd sub8, but you can turn the processing of which minimises latency to an absolut minimum they say. However, the trinnov adds a lot of latency anyways and could probably just adjust to the latency of the subs (subs and mains going out on different outputs of the nova).

I don't need a sub for mixing-decisions down to around 50hz with my scm25's. However, sometimes i am missing some real-world-consumer-bass-heavy-reference when mixing hiphop/pop. A dead-flat response just feels unnatural for bassheavy music on them, and turning the bassboost on the back of the speakers isn't doing what i am looking for.

Trinnov will account for latency from DSP and delay the mains to match the sub(s) - it will treat it as 'distance', but same outcome in the end. I use ATC mains with DSP subs (Genelec) and Trinnov and it works perfectly. I'm not tracking so I don't care about latency but you can bypass Trinnov as well.

If you know the exact latency the sub adds, you could add that to the trinnov indeed (I somewhat forgot or didn’t understand you had a trinnov going on)..

At this point I’d look for a sealed sub if possible (even with dsp) as long as you know how much latency it has)..

Btw the Abacus is not “that” much more expensive than the Hedd.. and it’s a 10” sealed box. (Mgm Audio in ZH should be the swiss distributor, I can imagine they’ll get a sub as well, and they will let you test it, if you ask nicely )

Although the Hedd is quite clever with the fact that you can close the ports and make it a sealed box.. Ideally you want a bigger driver than an 8” sealed box sub with the scm25.. the hedd 12 is probably the one to get, but that comes at a very different price.

In Switzerland you’ll find the SVS SB2000 Pro which are sealed cabinets for hifi/HT use, and they sport a 12”, and they’re about the same price as the hedd bass 08 (mind you, you’ll need an adapter to go into an rca/cinch input (you can find it in hifi store like müller&spring, and I imagine that they might let you test it in your room).

These are probably your best bet for an inexpensive sub that delivers what you want in a system with atc and a trinnov..

Again, thank you for all your inputs. After testing some subs in my room that were easy avaiable, i ended up with the HEDD 08 and am very happy with it (altough later i will get a second one for stereo subs). I use it sealed, and you can actually turn off the linearizer-dsp to not have those 30ms latency.

I also tested a 10" and a 12" sub in my room (focal and adam), and while impressive, they were too much / not what i was looking for.

My ATC's deliver punch down to 60HZ, and that's also wher i put the crossover for the sub. I am now able to have a target curve without getting nasty dips at 80hz, which is great.

I will post some screenshots or the whole mdat file once i figured out how to do this..

Mdat file and a screenshot of my measurments without the sub (flat) and with the sub (3dB tilt). I couldn't produce a proper tilt without the sub, the atc's in my room then produced a very uneven bass-response (especially around 60-80hz)

The 3dB-tilt file is the one i use mostly for mixing, it just gives a fullness / roundness to the bass which feels more natural and real-worldish than the flat atc's.

After all, i am now super happy with the system being under +- 2dB from 25-20'000Hz withous loosing the punch of the atc's bass response. And, of course, it also sounds phenomenal to my ears (it also did before the sub though..)
