I know 1176 threads have been done to death, but I wanted to know if any new contenders have come on the scene in the last couple of years. People used to rag on the current UA reissue but is it really that bad? I used to have a Mohog and sold it like an idiot. I know about the purple and the cheaper clones like the audioscape etc, but is there anything else? Not really interested in 500 series.

What are you guys liking that is currently available?

If you don’t need any modern bells and whistles, the Audioscape 1176’s are legit. I’ve got the D and it sounds just like vintage units I’ve used. The A and F sound great too, check the videos on the website.

Yeah im not really looking for a lot of features on an 1176. I know the audioscape stuff sounds good, I had the SSL comp for a minute, but I felt like the build quality left something to be desired, at least on the SSL comp. Have you compared the sound of the Audioscape vs the UA 1176 reissue? All else being equal I would rather spend more for the UA just to have better build quality, since im going to be using it every day for the foreseeable future. If the UA doesn't sound as good thats another issue.

That Serpent does look really nice too. I hadn't seen that before. I'm going to read more about it.

I also have the SSL comp, but I haven't cracked it open. I own three Audioscape pieces, and had two others come and go. I've never had any technical problems with any of them.

The 76D is for sure better sounding than the UA reissue if you're after the Rev D sound, as I don't think the reissues are actually clones. I've used them a couple times, and IMO they are not worth the price tag considering options like Audioscape, Hairball, Serpent, etc.

I don't know. When it comes to things like this (where there are millions of copies, etc) I'm tending to shun subjectivity...and prefer legit engineering as in the original company with the original details, paperwork, schematics, etc. That's just me.

I've heard the Audioscape SSL and while it sounded ok...it sounded nothing like the original SSL imo. The original's sound was so much more responsive to the controls and reacted differently.

Anyone out there have both the audioscape D and UA reissue? Chime in let us know what’s up

I have an Audioscape 76D, Hairball, Lindell 17x and Warm 76. Audioscaoe is my favorite but all are good. Also have 2 distressors and a Tweaker which are just as good. Any will work.

Agree. I was Going to grab a AS until I Heard a comparison to some OGs and it made the AS sound like a plugin, thin and lifeless. I feel Like these “clone” companies should just re name and re design units so they are there own thing. People prob wouldn’t compare and if they did the disappointment wouldn’t be so huge.

The thing is the vast majority of folks buying an 1176 clone never have and never will hear the real deal, so how can they be disappointed? Many have heard the hype, and that’s what all those manufacturers are banking on and that’s why the cloning industry is so lucrative.

Those of us who have experience and access to the original pieces of “coveted” gear like original Neve 1073’s, LA2A’s, U47’s, etc… are very much in the minority and don’t move the needle when it cones to sales or perception and reception of clones hitting the market. And the higher the prices continue to soar, the less the access will be to the originals, even to working pros. I just saw 1176 rev D’s and F’s have surpassed the 5-figure mark. Only several years ago I thought Rev A’s going there was insane.

I have a hairball rev a. My tech friend found a UTC 0-12 for the input when he was building it. I think that brings it much closer to the thing. I'd like to try the Audioscape d at some point.

What is the closest to the Urie revision D? I heard the Hairball rev D compared to it, but the Hairball was a little bit more harsh sounding to me then the original. I don't think the UA reissue sounds like the Urie revision D either, although I love how it sounds; it's just different is all. I haven't hear much of the Audioscape one.

The Bluey is pretty close to the Serpent but much easier to use. It’s got a bit more of a mid range bite than the open top of the Splice. It’s good value with a cool character.

Peace Paul. Do you remember any loss of lows with the splice or cla? As far as tone which 1176 besides the reissue /original do you vibe with

They all have their different colours but I like the Mohog and the Splice for their flavours.
The Bluey works well for vocals because of the midrange.
The Purple is cool for it is the brightest.

Might pull the trigger on a IGS Volfram. Also 2 units but dual mono. Not many reviews online about this one, anyone got this recently?

Wolfram is great, everything IGS makes is gold. If you don’t need stereo Wes Audio Beta 76 also sounds great and is a reliable company.
