Custom Stamchild aka Stamchild 670+ Story
I've been deliberating writing this since about December when I sold my Stamchild MK2. I wanted to craft a post that is respectful, constructively critical and honest.
Let me start off by saying that I own or have owned a handful of Stam Audio products including the SA 4000MK2 w/ Neve mod, a Stamchild MK2, a SA76D+, a Stereo Pultec, SA312 Tube and a SA87. I do NOT think Stam Audio is a scam and I know for certain that after long wait times, you all and I have received products from them in the end. This story is more unique and I am in no way saying anyone is stealing money from anyone. That was NOT my experience so please don't think that!
All of the products that I've had from Stam have been top notch, with excellent quality and sound. I am pleased with the products that I still own which are only the SA4000, SA76d+ and Pultec. If you have a chance to get one on Reverb, do it. If you want to wait for a while, then do it. You really won't regret the quality and sound.
I would like to reiterate that I was a repeat customer with mostly positive experiences and as far as the products go, they are super solid!
Here's my gripe that I would like to alert people of. Yes, Josh was very good at communicating with me and I have almost if not over a hundred email correspondences to back that up. I started off in late 2023 by putting down a deposit for a Stamchild MK2 but immediately emailed Josh if he would ever truly make a variable attack/release and feed forward/back feature similar to the Unfairchild. (He had mentioned maybe being able to do this on a forum) When I reached out, he said he'd be into doing this but that he'd need 70% up front to cover such a high dollar cost for a custom job. He also had emailed me other little Easter eggs that he thought could make this unit special: a deesser, modern and vintage switches etc.
Now keep in mind, I KNOW this would have been an extremely custom and costly unit to make. The thing is, he sent me pictures of what were supposedly the faceplates and renderings of the unit, hinting at progress being made in the unit. Also in typical fashion, dates kept getting pushed back over and over again. That's fine, whatever.
As time went on with no additional progress, Josh offered to send me a Stamchild MK2 to use until the custom unit would be ready. Keep in mind, I already paid the full amount for a Stamchild MK2 so he wasn't REALLY doing me that solid of a favor. I accepted this so offer that I at least had something to show for the thousands of dollars I had sent months prior. ($5593)
Once the Stamchild arrived, I thanked Josh and asked him how the switching would go once the custom unit was done and we went back and forth a little. However, come November 2024 I asked about progress and he said (after saying this would be 100% possible to do this custom job):
“Brother I really wish I could but I am so busy I can’t develop that project”
I'll be honest, the whole thing just felt really dirty. I was extremely excited about the custom unit and would have just appreciated transparency from the beginning. The dirty part just seems like as long as I would have kept sending money, he would have kept telling me things that I wanted to hear and maybe keep sending renderings of the custom unit. Once I got the MK2, it seemed like he just wanted me off of his back and knew that I really had no leverage to argue.I ended up selling the Stamchild because it didn't feel right and ultimately wasn't what I wanted after romanticizing a custom unit for so long. I did not want to share the renderings to this forum because I did not want to draw attention to this project but I do indeed still have them.
Once again, I'm happy with all of the products I have of theirs and I know others will be too. The Stamchild was also cool and sounded fantastic but it all just left a horrible taste in my mouth.
*The reason why I'm writing this is just as a cautionary tale. I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm not trying to slander anyone. Everything that I have written is true and I can back it up with the ( I just counted) over 126 email correspondences that we had over the course of a year.
I do not think Josh is a bad person, I know business is business but I do think his business practice is bad and dishonest.
My caution is just to beware and don't buy something or give money to someone if it sounds too good to be true. If you're wanting to buy stuff from Stam you're going to wait and you're going to get the product that you paid for IF it's listed on their site. Keep writing and keep asking questions. Though communication was pretty good with Josh, truth and transparency were absolutely not. Do NOT necessarily trust that you're going to get a custom unit if you're feeling bold and yeah I suppose somewhat greedy like I was. It just was never going to happen from the get go and I wish I would have just known that. This part is MY FAULT for putting too much trust in someone that I don't know. The exact same thing almost happened a few years ago with a custom Wooly Mammoth Deluxe unit that I was trying to get after he had been out of business for a few years.
Even after saying he would not do this project, he did offer me a discounted price of one of these beastly units he is supposedly going to make (some 10u thing or whatever) but after thinking about it, I decided I really want nothing to do with them anymore.
If you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask. I will no longer support Stam Audio going forward after giving them over $10,000. I've switched over to some Audioscape products and it's much faster, great transparent communication and stellar build quality.
Please read all of this and once again know that this is only meant as a heads up. After reading so many things on this dedicated forum, I wanted to provide my input as someone who was in what I feel was a pretty unique yet crappy position with them.
I'm not going to respond to anything but constructive conversation. I will not respond to provocation or people trying to argue or fight the contents of this post. If someone would walk me through how to post screen shots, I'd be happy to share any conversations or pictures of the custom unit that were sent to me that can back up any of this material. This is a forum and I'm allowed to provide my story and honest feedback. Thank you!
