hmmm ...your profile says you have a Shelford. You keeping it alongside the Coils?

Where'd you find two brand new ca70s so quickly? I procrastinate buying only because I don't like waiting for stuff.

I may dump my Shelford once I buy a ca70. I have an intuitive feel the coil may fit more with what I do in times where I'm incorporating a standalone pre.

Oooooh! Well spotted. But I actually had to sell those about a year ago to get me through a difficult spot. Recently sold a property, so now I'm reinvesting a portion of the equity with a view to improving not just the units and mics in my studio but also my workflow (a patchbay, finally!). But I like to have stereo pairs with Line In capabilities so I can run busses through them during mixdown. I'll be honest, I prefer my AMS Neve 8801 pair to the Shelfords I sold.

I’ve owned both, they don’t resemble each other to my ears. The only thing I miss on the shelford, which I tell steve to incorporate on his psu mkii, is the extra I/o on the pre. Like a line xlr input, and/or the duel outputs.

The Coil preamps have a line / mic toggle switch, why would you demand another input output line to accomplish the same aim?

Considering how much I loved running stems and mixes through mine, it would have been nice to have a mic and line input on the back so you wouldn’t need to patch/rematch every time between tracking and mixing. Locomotive does it and it’s a nice feature. I understand why Coil doesn’t do it though, preserve the signal chain integrity at all costs!

I don't understand how switching input jacks would deteriorate any signal chain integrity. For me, having two inputs (mic/line) for any mic pre style device is at the top of my "must have" list. I like the fact that my CA70's have a mic/line feature, but hate that I have to pull out the rack any time I want to use them on a line level source. (Or vice versa - on a mic source - depending on how I have them set up). I have modded mic pre's rear panels before to do this when there is room. As a matter of fact, I had Eric do it to my WT72's.

Oh yes, great point! I was thinking selfishly about my own setup. I've got it and the 286S sibling racked in an open rack with the back directly accessible. If it was racked in one of my clothes are acts that would be a pain.

Time for a mic pre input patchbay, Dr Bill! I have the RME ones - really good and solves this problem, same with Neve line ins if you have em.

I've got patch bays coming out my wazooo!!! Including a few XLR ones. But mostly TT. Well over 1000 points......

SA87T -> CA70S -> MDC Delta Mu

The MDC Delta Mu is a interesting Nuvistor tube based comp. Just received it a couple days ago. So much to learn there. I set it to ~2-4 dBu GR, and super fast attack and release settings just to explore. In the image, the CH2 (right side) are the setting's I employed. On listening, I can hear that the attack (or more likely maybe release) need to be slower due to response to the plosive on the word 'proverbial'.

Boxes' settings shown below. Pay no attention to the attention seeky CP-448 trying to peeky peek photobomb from the back.

Only thing ITB is a stock Live HPF at 70 hz and a stock Live Verb at a measly 8% wet just so your ear doesn't feel like Im'ma giving it a Wet Willie with my vox (or would that have been a Dry Willie?!). Of course it needs some more processing, but you all like it nearly raw ammirite?
