No, you don't. This is another classic misconception about these mics. I've opened mine several times, without problem.

I like to look inside all my equipment and my Sankens are out of warranty anyway. They do sound stellar, so there is no technical need to open them up, but I like to study what's in there.

I'm very impressed by Sanken products.

The C0-100K is awfully good as in the CU-44x. That entire 2 capsule, one for bass and one for the rest is fascinating.

It's a very different sonic direction. Yes clean.... But there is a footprint there that I really like. I don't own either one but they are on the list.

There are some snic characteristics that are so very pleasing in an honest way that just makes me smile.

I could put both of these mics in front of James Taylor for vox and gtr and maybe add a AEA44 for thump on guitar.

Those are very different mics. The Soyuz is warmer, has more "sound", is rounder and softer sounding.

Just recorded a nice female singer today with the Sanken, great mids all around, superb air yet I'm not using any de-esser. it's rare, because I usually Soothe and De esse a lot. Preamp was LA-610MKII, I'm sure something Nevesque would be cool too.

clean but real and vivid, I just dirty-ed up the take a bit but I can always step back and take away plugins if needed.

Really would like to hear a working CU-41 on Double Bass.

I would bet that is sounds clean, tight, punchy, dry and present, with high resolution and depth.

I would only use it for double bass if the music allows it. The double bass might not be well integrated in the mix if it's recorded with a CU41, because it could sound too "neutrally dry and present". "There's a double bass" is different from "the bass is fulfilling its function of giving the music its base rhythmically and tonally, without attracting inappropriate attention to itself as an isolated instrument". Is that understandable?

You could pair it with a "sweet" sounding mic like the KM84 (I usually use a U47 in the area of the f holes and a KM84 on the fretboard).

BTW, I have used the CU41 on Cello, it sounds great.

I puchased another broken CU-41 recently, only £200.. This time we have capsules intact but seemingly an electronics problem.. so I will combine my two broken ones and have one working, for just £475! Not bad... assuming all goes well.

I would still try to get both to work. It's a very nice stereo pair, for example for overheads.

One is missing the top-end capsule, so it would be a kind of skewed stereo.. I would attempt to do that, although it seems finding another broken one is much cheaper and easier than trying to get Sanken or any of their distributors to replace/repair it.. or even reply to contact emails

Just UK ebay! A working one I missed for around £800. All from the 80s 90s - earlier ones.

I only have a small studio so overheads are not really a thing - defintely no drums being played. Stereo close-micing though..
