I just wanted to add this for anyone else encountering this problem: I noticed on my SL880 that if I exercised the modulation wheel the data output would stop. I suspect if I cleaned the wheel with a proper potentiometer cleaner (I'm not sure the proper Deoxit formulation) or replaced the wheels, it might go...
