Interesting that high level ProTools proficiency is still specified (and I suspect this would also apply generally across academic institutions and broadcast facilities worldwide), despite PT having a now-diminishing prominence in the marketplace, compared with other multitrack DAWs

It probably takes some time for trends in the marketplace to be reflected in academia....and of course PT skills could easily be generalised across to other platforms....so if you'd done PT approved training long ago it would still have currency and validity now ?

Those same institutions probably made site license multi-purchases of ProTools back when it was kingpin cutting edge DAW, and are now rusted-on wedded to the platform, despite it being overshadowed...even by the likes of Reaper. I guess even now PT is still considered an 'audio industry standard'

I can train anybody on my other DAWs that I use if they are good at Pro Tools. That being said, every commercial studio I've encountered here in LA is PT based. The film industry is PT based as are many other places... IME, they are still the 800lb gorilla out there.

The students that come out of IU are among some of the best trained young audio engineers I have ever come across and I'm always happy to have them working for me as the need arises. Workstations aside, they get great experiences there in a host of different situations that relate to audio engineering. This is a first rate job opening for the right person.

Actually, University of Indiana is not a bad university. But it needs to be stated, this is not really "faculty" positions. This is just glorified instructor positions.

Interesting comment, what workstation(s) would you say our students should be learning?

I've been placing interns in the industry for many years and I can't think of any facility that was not Pro Tools based. In the Pop segment of the industry Logic is common for music composition, but frequently the tracks end up in Pro Tools for mixing. We have hundreds of graduates working in the industry and of those I remain in touch with, outside of classical music production and mastering, there are only a handful that don't use Pro Tools.

We do keep a close eye on this since our equipment must reflect industry trends, when/if the industry moves away from PT, so will we; but as Ben pointed out, DAW experience is easily transferable between platforms.

Please read the position announcements, one of them is tenure-track, or for a qualified candidate we'll hire with tenure at the associate or full professor rank.

The second position is tenure-ineligible, but it differs from an instructor in that it comes with a three-year rolling contract, full salary & benefits. Being tenure-ineligble means that the candidate can concentrate on teaching rather than research/creative activity.

I was kidding, sorta. I was, alas, born in Indiana and I never go back.

But there is no question that IU is one of the top music schools in the country. My oldest daughter auditioned to go to undergrad there as a cello student with Jonas Starker.

I am not trolling. But don't spread mis-information. A "faculty member" in a "*.* + music + *.* + studies" program is far removed from a faculty member in a core academic program like economics or linguistics. Usually these posts for positions are on par with community college programs where instructors are called "instructors". I have more respect for a community college that is calling the program and the position for what it actually is than a university that is creating little extension programs in their curriculum to pull in some extra revenue on the site.

Oh FFS. Why don't you spend a moment to learn what IU is actually doing, what the university is about (and specifically the music department which is one of the top music schools in the US) before sticking your foot in your mouth.

IU is far from an "extension" program. It's an intensive 4 year degree program at the highest level offered in the USA. The faculty there is top notch. Just because they aren't part of a "traditional" academic discipline does not mean that the students are not put through a rigorous program. As I mentioned above, I'm thrilled when I get the students out of that program to come work with and for me as they are among the students best prepared for the "real world" of any program I have seen.

Just because you don't seem to respect it does not make it a sub-par program.

IU was on my short list of schools that I wanted to go to grad school (to study saxophone performance). But then Eugene Rousseau left and it lost it's appeal.

If I had managed to finish my degree, I would be applying for either of these positions in a heart beat. Instead I got caught up working and lifelong school lost it's appeal.

Sure, there's lots of great music schools in the country (an abroad), and the value to each student depends largely on which specific faculty members they want to study with and what their field of study is. A saxophone performance major won't have the same attraction to one school, as a saxophone player who wants to study music education, or ethnomusicology, or music technology and recording will have to another school. But, IU is constantly ranked in the top 10 no matter which ranking system you use, and they have produced many, many great musicians, music educators, and academics and engineers studying and working in all of the music related fields for many, many decades.

Sure, whatever you say. I use other rankng sites and i will throw in into the top 50. Why don't we agree to meet half way and call it the Juliard of "Steel country". :-)

But back to those postings, UI many have a good traditional music school, but those positions are not for music faculty. They are for "audio engineering" faculty. I usually lump those into the college level stuff and side revenue for the main music school. We also have great music schools up here at the University of Toronto and Royal Academy of Music -- but they really are know mostly for what they excel in, which is the traditional training of music. They also have their little side business of multi media and audio engineering courses but you would be very hard pressed to say their programs are as good as the colleges like Sheridan and Ryerson that have been specializing those programs for 30+ years.

Some posters disgrace themselves in this GS thread with their miserly comments. IU is fantastic in academics, setting, and reputation. The audio program is really first class. The town is great.

Anyone who says otherwise has not visited and has not talked to grads who are high achieving people.

And if you want to talk Canadian programs, talk McGill. Another top program that has put no shortage of grads into top positions. I would consider IU to be a program that puts out similar quality grads.

That may be because you are not well informed on how large universities work. I think as far as the music engineering and multi media producing programs go, places like Fanshaw and Humber are way ahead of the game of traditional universities. It has more to do with the fact that these colleges have been running the program's for a lot longer, it's their primary bread and butter, and those particular music programs are their focus as a college. Traditional universities focus more on STEM and international student enrollment and place liberal arts departments (such as music and arts) way down the priority list. A good indicator is to look at the bios of the faculty that teach the courses, and look at how long they have been in the department teaching it and what their status is. But what do I care, it's your opinion that matters to you.

Most of us have spent quite a bit of time, either as students, or working with, for or at colleges. We know how colleges and universities work.

Even by your simple budgetary criteria, IU still is one of the best music schools in the country. They have faculty who have been there for DECADES and a a budget that is larger than many schools have for their other academic programs.

Seems like a great opportunity! Good luck finding the right candidates!
