It’s time to cue the music…

2025 has been a tumultuous year, with geopolitical challenges all over the globe testing the patience of citizens everywhere. Entertainment is an excellent escape from the modern ills of the world, and for those that create, finding new and exciting ways to deliver diversions to the masses is a lifelong quest. Now that entertainment - whether filmed, live, theatrical or otherwise - is arguably more important, and more valuable than ever, where do you go to improve your craft, to exchange ideas about the tech behind the show, to learn about the latest developments in the science and art and break bread (hot dog optional) with like-minded professionals and enthusiasts alike?

The answer of course, as it has been for the past three decades, is Messe Frankfurt's Prolight + Sound show, this year running from 8-11 April. It’s pretty meta, right? A live experience about, well, live experience production! But there is no better showcase and no better annual exhibition on the subject anywhere, and it’s going to be a must-visit for a lot of reasons.

It’s time to light the lights…

The anticipation is palpable in the world of entertainment technology as the Prolight + Sound show gears up to open its doors in Frankfurt this April. With its 30-year legacy, this globally celebrated event continues to set the stage for the latest advancements in light, audio, stage, AV, and event technologies. Of particular interest this year are the trends in professional audio and the revolutionary integration of artificial intelligence (AI). These topics and much, much more will be on display and on discussion at Prolight + Sound this year - so here’s what we’re looking forward to!

Three decades of light, sound, and magic

Founded 30 years ago, the event has evolved consistently, serving as a crucial platform for industry professionals worldwide to exchange ideas and showcase innovations. The show was able to solidify its unique position by encompassing the entire spectrum of event technology across its five key sectors: lighting, audio, theatre & stage, AV & Camera, and event technology.

Pro Audio: A Symphony of Innovation

One of the core attractions at the Prolight + Sound show, and one that will be of key interest to Gearspace members, is its robust pro audio element. This year promises to elevate that legacy with groundbreaking innovations and immersive experiences. In the open-air Live Sound Arena, visitors can experience the sound of powerful PA systems under real-life conditions - from wide-ranging line arrays to localised sound reinforcement solutions. The Live Sound Arena is already fully booked, and will feature renown manufacturers such as audio-zenit, Aura Audio, Celto / Steinigke, DAS Audio, Harmonic Design, HK Audio, KV2 Audio, RCF, TW Audio, Voice-Acoustic and Wharfedale Pro showcasing their latest solutions. DAS Audio and RCF will each present their systems on their own respective stage. From state-of-the-art sound systems that promise unparalleled clarity to innovative mixing technologies, the audio section is set to be a popular draw. Speaking of mixing technologies, one of the most exciting areas of the fair, especially for a lot of Gearspace members, will be the new MixLab. Proving that they are far from a dying tech, this will be a space dedicated to mixing consoles - both live and studio. Visitors to Prolight + Sound will be able to get hands-on with a wide variety of consoles on display, chatting with experts and company reps both informally and in organised mixing workshops, practicing their chops in simulated mixing scenarios and live recordings and generally getting to grips with the latest in console technology. Additionally, there will be a fully-equipped pro-grade mixing and mastering studio, acoustically treated and ready to have a go at in Hall 11.0. Important, because in the world of live sound, music and vision production, the studio afterwards where you polish and finish the products you’re making is almost as important as what happens in the event itself.

AI: an actual game changer

The integration of AI into audio technology is a highlight this year. AI’s ability to analyse and adapt audio environments in real-time offers unprecedented opportunities for dynamic soundscapes. Whether it’s helping to.adjust acoustics based on audience size or venue design, or customising sound to individual listener preferences, AI is transforming the audio landscape. The technology is moving well beyond just the “nuts & bolts” of event production, and this year’s Prolight + Sound show will address the full potential of AI in the live sphere - more on that later!

Artificial Intelligence are the buzzwords of the decade, with the looming tech standing at the forefront of technological innovation across many different industries. The event technology sector is no exception, and Prolight + Sound is on top of it.

There are a number of distinguished speakers sharing their wisdom at Prolight + Sound, and one of them is Dr. Uve Samuels, a renowned expert and CEO of the Exponential Innovation Institute. He will be giving a keynote on how AI is reshaping the future of events. His insights will illuminate AI's role in enhancing events holistically - how AI can assist in the before, during and afterwards. AI isn’t just about the technical aspects of a live event - while on one hand, it can help with channel strips, lighting design and other purely “tech” aspects, it’s something that can be utilised in otherwise more nebulous areas of event planning and execution as well. Imagine an event where AI-driven systems predict attendees, anticipate crowd dynamics, still manage to optimize all the sound and lighting, and maybe even afterwards facilitate networking through intelligent matchmaking. AI’s potential to personalise and enrich the attendee experience is a key theme at this year’s Prolight + Sound. The technology is not just a tool - it is an enabler that could redefine how we conceptualise and execute events.

Green today, happy tomorrow

Amidst the technological marvels, the show also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. The “ProGreen” theme highlights the industry's commitment to eco-friendly practices. From energy-efficient sound systems to sustainable event practices, the show will explore how technology can contribute to a greener future. This initiative is crucial as the industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices amidst growing environmental concerns.

What about events, you ask? Well, of course there are events! EVVC, the European Association of Event Centres, is hosting "The Green Sessions" across the four days with green themes front and centre. In addition, guided tours (lasting approximately an hour) will take place from Tuesday to Thursday, giving visitors an overview of the fair from a perspective of sustainability, connecting the participants with products, services and innovations that are particularly “green”.

Of course, Prolight + Sound leads by example in this initiative - in collaboration with the Messe Frankfurt itself, the energy used by the event is 100% renewable. The majority of the materials used in the exhibition are recycled. Finally, and this is good news for visitors - a combined RMV ticket for local public transport to get to and from the Messe is free to attendees, helping to cut down on emissions and provide an easy way to get to the fair.

Inform, Educate, Entertain

True to tradition, Prolight + Sound 2025 will offer a wide range of educational opportunities, expanded for the 30th anniversary and absolutely on-trend for the important topics of the era. The bilingual programme includes the Pro Audio College, offering insights from industry leaders and hands-on experiences that are invaluable for professionals aiming to stay ahead. The comprehensive panel and lecture programme of the ‘Camera College’ will offer exciting insights into current industry topics related to technology, security and the future of the moving image. Finally, The Theatre College is the latest addition, new this year - and it’s focussed on teaching attendees about cutting-edge stage technologies and sustainable practices. The three Colleges in action over the course of Prolight + Sound emphasise the event’s commitment to comprehensive learning experiences, important for both newcomers to the industry and grizzled old pros who are willing to learn a few new tricks as well.

Beyond the cornerstone colleges, there will be a large number of tertiary talks and seminars with a wide variety of industry veterans and experts, on a range of topics, including the sustainability mentioned previously. Another key area that will feature an education aspect amongst other facets is the MusicOneX area. In previous years, this was called the ‘Performance + Production Hub’ but as it’s expanded far beyond just that, a name change was in order. This interactive special area is where creatives and companies meet. It’s the perfect place to learn and have fun! Themed areas will host hands-on gear demonstrations and workflows. Workshops, panels and Q&A sessions will keep visitors sharp. A 360-degree stage with an LED wall will host both product presentations and performances. A special focus on social media will be a part of it all too, so if you’re itching to learn more about how to put your best foot forward across the multiverse, this will be a great place to start. Finally, there will be loads of live entertainment, including the 2025 DJ World Championship. It’s a can’t miss section of the fair.

Networking remains a fundamental cornerstone of the Prolight + Sound experience. The expansive exhibition space is specially designed to foster connections, with networking areas dedicated to each sector - but the banter and exchanging of details won’t be limited to just the show floor. No one loves to host a party more than the Germans, so the event’s 30th anniversary promises lively celebrations, including community nights and a grand birthday party in Frankfurt’s buzzing Sachsenhausen district - hopefully if you go you’ll have the energy for it because it promises to be a blast! PS - this year, the featured musical guest on 8 April is none other than ex-Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür with his current project MusikSoldat - not to be missed no matter how much your feet hurt!
The Great Outdoors

If you’re looking to combine fresh air and first-hand experience of live concert and event technology, we have some great news for you. Step outside in front of Hall 11 and you’ll find fully-rigged large stage constructions to explore and examine. With “sound reinforcement under realistic conditions” you’ll be able to hear these rigs in real life, up close (or further away, if you prefer!) a truly rare opportunity if you work in live sound.
