one thing that i find so useful in Ableton is setting the loop brackets so that the sample start point is in between. you can come up with all sorts of stuff that wouldn't be possible without the sample wrapping back around to the start naturally. (not sure if i'm explaining it right.) most samplers (hardware and software) require the loop to start at or after the start point, which won't allow for this.
somewhat related to your point is that i often find myself coming up with stuff that sounds so tight just triggering loops/sounds by hand, but like you said, trying to sequence it to sound the same is more work than i'd think it would be. i've always been aware of it, but i wish i had spent more time thinking linear (just recording what sounds right and stitching it together along a timeline) and not locked to a clock/tempo.
the ableton looping does sound interesting. i have been thinking of trying ableton after only recently discovering that acid 7 can be set to snap to events and loop points instead of the grid. been following a few producers like nick craven and finn who use ableton and always wondered about it
yes been doing the arrange by sample start end/looping by ear off and on in the daw since forever but for me it always gets away from me, i go back and realize i need to drag an entire section of the song a few pixels over and after that i lose the bearings
but, if i can insert fine tuned tempo changes in an mpc arrangement it should be ok since then i can sequence each part and get it looping and then put it together
i think there needs to be a feature in the mpc and daws in general or maybe there is, where you can lock the original tempo of a selected midi track, then you can change the master tempo until the passage you want to loop or sync lines up with it
