Since getting my Prophet 10 I’ve completely fallen in love with hardware instruments and I’m now looking a Synth which would provide a pleasing constraint to that of the Prophet 10.

I recently bought an Analog Rtym MK2, I love it’s sound, form factor and the Elektron features and was wondering if the Analog Four would partner well either the prophet.

Also on my Radar are:

The Quantum, Iridium, Summit and Super 6.

Basically I’m after an other work horse that will compliment the P10.

Maybe something digital and wave table based like Waldorf M.

I’m not interested in plug-ins, they don’t nothing for me.

I’m using Cubase for all my sequencing and tracking.

Since it is a polyphonic Analog, why not go opposite:

-Groove 3rd wave: Wavetable synthesis, would be (somewhat) similar to Summit, but more control over wavetables.
-Prophet X: Sample synthesis+subtractive synthesis.
-Quantum/iridium: FM, Wavetable, Digital.

Check out the Waldorf Quantum MK2. Totally different with your Prophet.

the prohet 10 and obx-8 to me are sufficiently different to make a case for owning both. each can create quality sounds that the other can't, and the possibilities of layering the two synths are spectaular. the obx-8 module version has high quality controls and graphics. midi out from the prophet to the obx-8 module gives you automatic instant sound layering exploration.

the interface on the quantum is fantastic. but if you don't like the sound, it doesn't matter. the only way to know is to demo one.

If no computer, then 3rd Wave seems an obvious one for the top synth to check out.

Another would be an Elektron synth (esp. since you could sequence your Prophet and anything else you get) - Digitone 2 or Syntakt, etc. that can also make drum sounds.

I pair the Prophet-esque AS-1 with a Hydrasynth.

Korg's new Multi/Poly sounds like it ticks a lot of boxes.

Welp, you made me read up on it as was contemplating possibility of swapping out the 2nd Hydrasynth that replaced a Minilogue XD module . . . but wtf no aftertouch keybed?!

(I say that as a long-term non-aftertouch player, but I really liked being able to use aftertouch to record into the XD's motion sequencer while you were noodling away.)

I can only tell you what works for me, and that is combining my rev4 with a Novation Peak

It's probably the most important aspect of deciding where one invests in hardware.

We do not know what you want to achieve with adding another hardware synth.

A good mono if I were you. Or an Oberheim style poly with SEM filter. Totally different beast than a Prophet or an Analog4 either.

My 1st guess is the virus ti but also the moog sub 37 or sequential pro 3. or any other cool mono synth.

I have a similar dilemma. I'm trying to determine the best hybrid poly to pair with my Prophet 10.

The suono buono polyvera looks interesting as something that could do both wavetables + samples through analog filters and capture that early hybrid aliased sound of the mid to late 80s so it would tick a lot of boxes for me.

The 3rd wave seems great but i think is a bit too much for my purposes, the waldorf m also seems kind of expensive for a keyboardless module and the behringer wave isn't out and I think it aesthetically looks kinda cheap and ugly.

I kinda wish sequential would come out with a new hybrid that combined aspects of the Prophet X and Prophet VS + actual wavetables

Do the Quantum and Iridium cover some of what the Virus TI did, or are they completely different?

Both of them have completely different sounding effects sections. Personally, I prefer the virus sound over the Quantum, but the Quantum does have a wider range of synthesis types so it comes down to personal perference in that regard. The reverb on the Quantum is pretty thick too. There's just not a lot of "mojo" so to speak, its a pretty clinical digital synth.

If you’re looking to do the most variety in the fewest number of synths, the Quantum/Iridium would be great. The Quantum 2 has a polyphonic aftertouch keyboard, which is really great.

For me that would be ob6

Nope, I'm going to be pretentious and say you can't pigeon hole it.

For the example the Prophet has been used on a huge range of different music. Why limit yourself.

Anyway, enough about genre I'm interested about hardware synths which would compliment the P10.

This is what I'm thinking.

All my hardware synths compliment the p10 because that is my main synth and anything I get is required to. Often I play them at the same time with the p10 - same notes like they are layers.

If I could have only one it would probably be the ob6 because of what it can do different compared to the p10 (filter, arpeggiator, distortion, effects, sub osc) but that is a toss up with a nice mono. For the mono I put them in low note priority so when playing poly at the same time it runs on the lowest note.

Here are my other current hardware synths that I feel all compliment p10. That isn't really a big deal because I believe that I can make anything sound good with anything so it is actually which synths do I think are most fun to use and different enough from each other. When put that way it is silly because then you are asking which synths I think are most fun... but you might like them too:

(mono) moog slim phatty, moog grandmother, studio electronics atc-1, pro3
(eurorack) make noise shared system
(rompler) motif es rack

I want to reduce and only have one of ob6/p12 and one of phatty/grandmother/atc-1 but so far I just swap them out so it probably won't happen.

A mono synth, or a modular.

"Rev 4" is the general designation for the new, reissue Prophet 5 and Prophet 10. Not a firmware thing.

As a P5 rev4 owner I also second a good mono synth. While the digital and poly synths are fine suggestions, why not truly compliment the Prophet with something that gels rather than counter points it. The Pro3 is a great pairing imo as it has Sequential, Moog & Oberheim filters, is very deep in modulation, has an awesome sequencer and arp plus its hybrid with the wavetable digi oscillator so can also add something fresh to the table. It's super deep and flexible yet easy and fun to operate. I also like to pair my P5 with the Moog Voyager for that classic Prophet/Moog combo. I'd also look into TEO-5 for an affordable Oberheim with mucho tricks up its sleeve, its next on my radar.

Subsequent 37 blows Pro-3 out of the water.
