The auditorium of the prep school I went to was this beautiful 100+ year old chapel with a pipe organ which I got to play. That organ (or acoustic synth if you will) altered the course of my life.

I am more a keyboardist and guitarist than a synthist, but I love classic analog and digital synth, modular, softsynth. These days, I mostly use samples and the three classic analogs I mentioned (P5, OBX, CS80).

I believe analog synth, new or old, has some sonic advantages over digital which are quantifyable and not subjective. I am not trying to say analog synth is better. Better in some things yes. Also very limited compared to digital, which is virtually limitless.

I love digital synth and couldn't function without it. I love modular synth, its a bit of the best of vintage and modern. Can't say I am fond of modern analog polys much. Haven't played The River, but I'd replace my JP-8 first.

Vintage synths such as the JP-8 and CS-80 are better than modern analog synths. I'm sorry. They just don't make em like that anymore. Don't give me this subjective jazz. They are better. Deal with it. They are heaven and earth rattlingly awesome is what they are. Even after many years of marriage, I am literally sexually aroused just thinking about them and the only reason I don't physically make love to one or actually sleep in bed with it is fear of damaging it. For many things, they are the end of the rainbow, no need to search further.

Are they always the right tool? Of course not. If the style doesn't call for it or the recording environment isn't right for it, a vintage analog might be nothing but an obnoxious, lo-fi hinderance. That's why I relate to them.

What was that experiment where they pretended to electricute human subjects using other unwitting human subjects to press the button/flick the switch with raising degrees of intensity. They could not see the subjects (that had drawn the short straw) but they could hear them screaming.

I think it was concluded that the vast majority would choose to press the button however the sad look on their face! I can not remember whether the 'switch pressers' were given any information about the 'screamers' prior to commencement of the experiment.

This spring time when most people were shut up I would be out and I could hear the trees and gorse bushes growing (all without the use of drugs by the way.) It was a fantastic time to be out. It was so quiet. It was very thought provoking.

Some people do not like the quiet. My mother was telling me recently about old friends who they used to visit up London city for parties and dinners. When they came to visit my mother to stay over they would all complain that they could not sleep because it was too quiet!!

I just found out about that myself on a podcast hosted by a psychologist named Angela Duckworth called “No Stupid Questions.” It’s actually very good and usually interesting, but they mentioned in passing that that study and she brought up that it had been discredited. That actually makes it even more interesting as a study in human psychology.

To the main question: For the moment, old analog is way better and much more exciting than new analog on all parameters.

I read about every Sovjet synth ever made and found the Altair 231 too (which unfortunately are at service to be repaired).

This is basically where I spend all my sparetime for the moment. With comrad Stalin and the Black Widow of Spain. To me, Polivoks is an outstanding example of synth history, and the MC909 couldn't be a better partner. Neither gives a living fck about “rounded”, “damped”, “smooth”, “creamy”, “silky” or the vacuum cleaned perfection of modern production.

I took the challenge to hear if I could make Polivoks sound "sweet". I wrote a nauseating pop tune in friggin major, Eurovision formula (the dark side of music theory) and failed miserably. Polivoks cannot sound sweet, because it cannot frigging sing without spitting and leaking all over. Even with the filter closed, it has this wonderful sizzling on top, which reminds of the noise from an old record. So comrad Stalin had a point.

However, since everyone has been so nice in this thread, I will simply dedicate it to you, the muses of my life, and wish everyone a happy new gear year.

So here it is. A pile of shtty Polipop. The melody line is Polivoks. The bass is MC909 but made from sampled Polivoks waveforms. All drums are from Polivoks too, though I have layered the BD and SD with some external samples. Lets call it "Happy Gear Year 2021, Slutz".

For example, at the start of 'Hairy Trees' there's a little Farfisa organ that I've got. It's got this weird knob that says 'Slalom', with a picture of someone skiing down a hill, and basically it gives you pitch-bend, which is quite unusual for an organ. This thread is seemingly not as effective as an digital versus analog thread. Hmmm. I took a break from my Polivoks to avoid implosion. We were at the doorstep of cyborg-unification, and the world is not ready for that yet.

Instead, I explored a synth I bought prime october, but haven't got much time to dive into; Technics WSA-1. Having loads of experience with romplers and great respect for Kronos, Montage and the New Fantom line, I must say that this is the most beautiful and epic sounding rompler I have owned. Seriously. It is very soft and smooth, yet clear, and with effects that make the sound very large.

Compared to usual romplers, it has additional drivers and sensitive resonaters to model the sound psysically. it has two vector controls and three assignable mod wheels. It is very expressive for a rompler. What a sad paradox that Technics did not know how to market it and spread the news in 1995, for this queen is competitive to the bone, even to those romplers of today.

And all that leads me to another revelation:

People mistake it for all possible things than itself. Even a minimoog is suggested on youtube, though it does not have a -24 ladder filter, and its -12db must be the most dirty in the world. As far from a moog as can be. Polivoks is an independent and incomparable war-machine whose mighty era would have been the period from early EBM into Industrial and Goa el classico if it had made it to the west.

TLDR: Bodyssey and Polivoks are incomparable as new vs old analog synth.


To follow up a little more on the question in a semi-seriously manner: A week ago I got my Bodyssey. It has all three filter types of the versions published. It has very fat VCOs, and generally sounds very "new", though it is a clone of an old synth. I am not into components and what happens to them when they age, but I can tell you happily, that any comparison between Bodyssey and Polivoks is pointless. They are very different analog synths, each with their own character. They also have different features by which you can do things on one but not the other.

Soundwise, I would claim that there is a broader overlab between the sound of Bodyssey's VCOs and filters and Deepmind 6 DCO and filters, than there are common ground between Polivoks and Bodyssey. Even the SEM like -12 db filter of Bodyssey sounds as clean as the arse of an angel in comparison to Polivoks' dirty-like-a-ho filter. And Polivoks VCOs are so rich from overtones that they often sound as if they collide even when placing them with an octave's distance. I have to place them with two octaves' distance to get a cleaner tone that would remind me of a new analog synth. Bodyssey does not reproduce this overlapping effect at all.

The question of the thread simply does not apply meaningsfully to these two synths. And I am grateful, for I do not like redundancy as far as buying synths concerns. They are both wonderful in each their unique ways. Good news to me.

I'm pretty new to synths..but this seems like an amazing drone machine..but you can run Midi and play it chromatically.

I'm not sure how that works, as I thought each of the eight pads corresponded to an individual mechanical disc. I would be interested to know that.

I think it sounds awesome for dark, industrial, drone type of sounds. But that's only after an hour or two of preview time.
