I'd be fine with it not being double boxed if it at least wasn't opened up and retaped. Like, we've received OBX8 keyboards from SW that weren't double boxed, but were still factory sealed! Not ideal, but no big deal!

I've reached out for a replacement, hopefully they come through and send it out proper this time around!

I actually hate that. I received my Prophet 10 from them like that too. Single box, retapped with candy thrown inside. I was able to tell the packaging around the synth wasn’t tampered with because I know how tightly tapped the plastic around their synths are when purchased new.

For what it's worth, the OBX8 module I bought from SW wasn't double boxed, which kinda bugged me. But it was in good shape when it arrived. It wasn't opened to have candy thrown in it, much to my wife's disappointment (I usually toss her the bags of SW candy when I get some heh.)

The OBX8 keyboard I bought from Perfect Circuit a few months ago was double boxed (as were the Minitaur and Yamaha Reface CP I also bought from them.)

(Perfect Circuit has become my go-to store for synth purchases as I don't get dinged for sales tax heh. Plus my personal interactions with them have been great.)

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of it lol. The new one they sent was 100% same, even after support "promised" it'd be double boxed and still factory sealed lol! Funniest thing is when I called them back to tell them about it. The guy I spoke to told me they send them out in the condition they get them, and that they DO NOT open up product boxes. I'm like, okay then how did things like candy and stuff get inside the box? No response to that lol.

Yeah me and a band mate have both purchased OB-X8s from them and they came just like yours - single box, not banged up at all, and still factory sealed. So lack of double box wasn't a biggie here! Which was great, 'cus I've kept synth boxes for every brand new synth I've ever purchased since the early 90s lol... all still in excellent shape!

If I think of it as a package design, we should pay more attention to the design of the box, and I think it is a good way to elevate an expensive product to something more valuable.

The printing costs will be quite expensive because of the size. Even if you do that, the risk of it being damaged and returned is much higher for heavy items.

For small products where the packaging is the product itself, I think this is natural for food and cosmetics. I think the situation is probably different for industrial products such as home appliances.

I think it's not a bad idea to use a simple double box to reduce the risk during delivery. Throwing it or hitting it against the corner of the loading platform is a common risk. For large and heavy items, the risk increases even more. Imagine loading that big box into your car.

It would be best to lay a blanket on the loading platform and gently place the item on top of it, but I don't think it's likely that you'd require that to happen during every delivery.

A gift in a plain cardboard box can be a little disappointing, but a box with a logo on it will make the recipient very happy. However, it would be a shame if the logo got damaged during delivery. It could also lead to the risk of the product getting lost somewhere.

Can we talk about the real tragedy with Sweetwater? The quality of candy is really declining. You don't even get the mini Smartees any longer, after they had already downsized from the full-sized ones. I don't even think I got Laughy Taffy with my last few orders.

I propose they have candy tiers! First tier: <$500, the stuff you get today. Second tier $500 to $2,000, a better selection of candies. >$2,000, throw in a full-sized Snickers or something. A Prophet 10 deserves to be shipped with better candies.

I fully agree, the last bag I got was the first time I threw it away without eating anything.

I was looking for something to stereo-ize the P5 and originally went for the Waza Dimension DC-2W, which I love, however I just got the Benidub Phase which is exactly what I was looking for, it has lfo depth and feedback which means you can dial back the phasey-ness and using the mirror mode for the lfo, you get this lush moving stereo effect without sounding like a typical phaser. It’s made to use with line levels so handles the P5 output fine also. It’s one of those things you don’t want to turn off.

I made my Prophet 10 module stereo by adding a Prophet 10 Keyboard to my studio. The module is on the left channel, the keyboard on the right channel, midi out from the keyboard goes to the module. The sound is out of this world, like a JP8 in dual mode but with 10 voices!

So, I was intrigued by the now past $900 off sale on the P10, but I just wasnt quite ready to pounce. Then, just a few days ago, I was browsing Zzounds and American Musical Supply (which I think are the same), and they had an Open Box P10 that still was listed at the sale price, so I succumbed to temptation and bought it.

Came SINGLE boxed, not in great shape, but luckily the synth seems fine. It’s been 2 days of tuning the hilariously wacked out oscillators. This is my first VCO poly, so the tones are GLORIOUS but the tuning and letting it warm up before playing has been a bit anxiety inducing.

Funny story about Sweetwater candy- one time, as I went to grab the candy bag outta their box, my hand brushed over a loose shiny metal object beneath the candy bag. It was a small “scissor style” box cutter. I seriously could have cut the shit outta myself on it. I thought to report it to Sweetwater, but I sorta felt that it would be a big hulabaloo, and luckily no injury occurred.

In my experience the tuning will settle down after a couple weeks heating up and cooling down. Just use the tuning knob and a guitar tuner and don't bother with calibration for a while.

The best bet is to clear the tuning tables when you first get it then power on and tune, wait 5 mins tune again, wait 30 mins tune again, wait an hour tune again - that should be most of whats needed.

Like others have said, yeah don't sweat it. It'll settle down once it learns the temp range it's in. It took a little time for my OB-X8 to settle in (which is essentially a Sequential synth heh.)

Does the rev. 4 interpolate smoothly between tuning tables if it is sparsely populated?

I know if you have tuning that happens to be something like a degree apart it is a disaster. I had a P10 keyboard that was the most unstable modern synth I’ve ever used, with a sample size of probably 20+ modern analogs.

The desktop is much, much more stable. None of the other DSI / Sequentials I’ve used have had problems either, the Take 5 I don’t think I ever even calibrated once.

I thought maybe I had a really early rev A o rsomething but Miles Away on youtube got that anniversary edition which has to be a recent one off the line and and mentioned it took his a full week to settle down so I wonder if there’s some magic amount of tuning you need to do, but if you do slightly too much you need to start over.

In my case it was quite mild. What I did was simply, whenever I heard it was out of tune, I pressed the tune button. It settled down within a couple of days. I still press it from time to time but only like once a couple of months, if I hear it out of tune.

On another note, I think I have finally come around to really like it now. My mistake was playing it dry for about 6 months and it didnt get much use in my tracks. Then I improved my audio setup so its easy to add effects via plugins in realtime while tracking, and it was a game changer. It sound fantastic with effects, it just need at least a touch of reverb and it wakes up.

For what it's worth, I've had both the keyboard and desktop versions of the OB-X8 (got the desktop first, but decided later on I had the space for the keyboard so sold the desktop and got that). From what I seem to remember, the desktop took a little more time to settle in while the keyboard felt a lot quicker. No idea if that's down to the construction differences between the units (and ambient room temperature here doesn't fluctuate much) or if was just random.

It's amazing what even just a touch of reverb can do right? I mean, I've been doing this a long long time and it still perks my ears up. I wonder if it's because our ears and brains are so accustomed to hearing everything in the natural world with a bit of ambience, everything making noise has its sound waves reflecting off nearby objects and such. And when we hear something completely bone-dry it can sometimes trigger something in our subconscious that says 'unnatural', and thus can sometimes feel a little off-putting and we don't even necessarily realize it.

I dunno Rev4 is one of the rare synths that sounds fabulous dry. Its got this organic quality and the PWM sounds so good. Obviously it reacts great to FX as well, mono output making it ideal for guitar pedals and such.

Interesting. I didn't like it that much until I drenched it in quality FX (see my post above). I find it to sound a little thin/harsh dry compared to my vintage synths.

It's not a synth like my OB-8 that perfectly fits in the mix right away, but the P5 rev 4 does take FX much better than the former.
