Noone is disputing that you are using ears to catch a sound, we are talking about a perception limit.
Its like if something passes so fast by your sight that you can't see it .. It's still hit your vision, you may have notice something going by, but you couldn't see it .. It's the same with anything under 5ms, you'd have to have some kind of super hearing to consciously catch it ..
But let me help this conversation out,
we are talking about the same thing
But as I stated its in ''the eye of the beholder''
The beholder being the producer in his studio in this scene.
Where working on a ''step'' moving a sound ever so slightly in a 16step loop ''can be heard'' as all your focus is on that step,
number of factors come into play, transients or phase on sound/s on same step, the sound before and after may also shade on what you are perceiving.
But it's just at that moment that you are catching it ...
as I said Im not doubting your experience'' ..
Play that track back 2 months after .. and your not going to be like: yhea I just noticed ''via hearing'' that I shifted that 3rd HIHhat 2ms back and that 2nd Snare is obviously 3ms before the beat ... because you can't '' distinctively perceive those ms moves'' ... but you can feel that the beat has a nice groove ..
Because when you where in that zen state of listening/producing/editing those ''step/s'' you made a conscious choice in design.
