p.s. I bought a V-Synth GT after it...and haven't sold any of my other equipment...the 2500 is only one tool in my arsenal.
I guess I can see your point, but I think we can agree that you can do anything with one. It's really arguably better as a single piece, not a part of a larger rig. The depth is so vast that it's really the only way to wrangle the best out of it.
Maybe I'm out of date on my prices? I've seen them on and off for about 600-800 USD.
When you put together all 5 of my volcas, we're talking about comparable territory in terms of critical mass to do a complete production effectively.
I think maybe we're valuing the "complete setup" differently?
Another good value is the EMU MP7 now that I'm sitting at home looking at my toys. Those can be had for about half of the K2500s I'm seeing, but you don't get a sampler.
Like, if I were starting over, I wouldn't have built my rig $100 at a time, I would have built it $500-700 at a time far more rarely.
Value to me is really about features with sufficient quality.
I picked my Poly-800 up for either $100 or $125 and that or the volcas are what I think in terms of analog on the cheap to get quality if you value analog over something else.
Someone mentioned the MS2000, that's a good one that I had for a few years, but didn't personally gel with it.
