I have an AK.

It's a great synth with its own personality. The menu diving isn't as bad as many make it out to be. The tiny screen otoh, it's a complete PITA if your vision isn't great.

Programming it is fun, and it's very easy to get carried away, especially with the sequencer.

I don't own the dominion, but have owned other mfb gear (drum machines and synths). Build quality could be better. They didn't inspire confidence.

As for making them sound alike, I guess you could... But it would require some real anal retentive tweaking.

I think the a4/ak is the safer bet.

Build quality of MFB Dominion 1 is on par or better than Elektron A4 or Rytm and way better than MFB kraftzwerg/megazwerg I own. MFB did great leap in building in latest line.

Like I stated previously, I don't own a dominion. That said, I can only comment on what I have owned, and previous MFB products (including the new tanzbar) have had QC and reliability issues. This may have changed.

The tiny screen is annoying. Still, it isn't a deal-breaker for me. The power of the sequencer and the awesome synth engine balance it out.

About the encoders: rtfm. They are not "insensitive". In fact, they are context sensitive. You twist slow, you get small surgical changes. Move faster, it works like most encoders. Push and turn gives you even more, plus many parameters used this way have smart virtual detents, giving you quick access to time divisions and other things you might want.

So yea... That's your answer.

I've spoken to two Tanzmaus owners who were sent Tanzmice? that had power supply input jack issues that prevented their use.

One had to wait several weeks to receive a replacement part (to, ya know, fix it himself) that was shipped with no tracking and then, ultimately, never arrived.

And this is MFB's most recent product.

Haven't heared any reliability issues with MFB in general and QC issues over Tanzbar. I have friend with TB and planning to buy one so do you mind to share the source that reporting such issues?
My Dom 1 is early # from second batch totally no issues.

Look that's usabitliy. Say P6 is around knob per function, doesn't need screen. But in case of screen-dependent synth that has alot of pagination it doesn't work. And AK unlike AR has alot of pagination.

RTFM doesn't change actual ppr of encoders and it's low that's why they have to develop unnecessary techniques like the one you've mentioned. And I know what I'm talking about -- I've different Bourns encoders 16 to 256 ppr and latter + quadrature could provide resolution better than midi cc and be on par with pots->dac resolution.
If it works for you -- but AK UI was nightmare for me.

It's true some people can't seem to wrap their head around the Elektron way of working. It's not for everyone, and not for the impatient that aren't willing to put in the time to learn it. For others it's incredible.

OK, then you have proven, that products from MFB are not useable. They always just dont work!! Thank you for your information, dude! This is well informed (especially concerning the theme: the Dominion 1) and very helpful, indeed.

(orr, my three MFB devices work very reliable so far, but this is just anectdotical and should be pure coincidence)

This isn't the point that I was making.
The point that I was making is that build quality has been an issue with MFB in the past, and that it has not been entirely resolved.

I don't have any skin in this game as I own neither. However, from audio demos alone, the Elektron seems much more interesting than the Dominion. The Dominion seems more traditional analog. Also I honestly haven't heard a video of the Dominion that makes me go "wow." The Elektron sounds pretty interesting in the hands of the right people... And it is the more professional instrument because of its capabilities and complexity. The Dom is a pretty basic synthesizer imo. You see what you get. It looks better though.

So it means that Model D or SEM are less professional because of even more limited capabilities or complexity. I think lot of famous professional musicians are laughing loud while reading this.

Also it looks like you've never tried Dom 1.

Professional in the sense that it requires more expertise in synthesis and midi implementation than just twiddling knobs on the Dom. The Dom is a simple instrument, when it comes to synthesizers. It would be easier to learn on than the Elektron, wouldn't you agree?

Well Dom voice has more modulation than A4. But other than that you are right, Dom is very 70ths early 80ths synth in terms of UI - it's knob pre functions so it could be operated totally in twiddling manner. Which is not easy with A4 because closer to late 80ths early 90ths synths UI.

This is what I enjoy about the modulation powers of the A4:

*2 LFOs, both with 2 separate destinations per voice. More than 60 destinations to choose from. 7 waveforms to choose from, and 4 trigger modes to choose from. OSC frequency tracking for linear FM of (again) over 60 different destinations.
*Neighbor routing. If you want more modulation, just send one voice to the input OSC of the next voice. Here you can add an oscillator and/or further modulate the signal.
*2 extra freely assignable envelopes, both with 2 separate destinations per voice. More than 50 destinations to choose from. 12 envelope shapes to choose from.
*An FX track with an additional 2 LFOs in it and all FX parameters available as destinations. 7 waveforms to choose from, and 4 trigger modes to choose from.
*The sequencer itself is a modulator of sorts, thanks to parameter locks, trigless locks, and parameter slides.

A4/AK is no slouch in the modulation department.

Agreed. Both cool machines but buy the Dominion 1.

The Dominion 1 build quality is very solid and not comparable to the other cheaper MFB boxes.
I'd say it's more solid than the Analog Keys, almost painfully solid. (The knobs are stiff)
In that regard both are leagues ahead of something like Bass Station II and Korg minikeys synths.

One shouldn't also forget that velocity, after touch , breath and more can each have up to 6 different destinations at different depths. It makes for pretty crazy 4 note poly synth sonics. My biggest disappointment - although unwarranted - is how you cannot get FM as good as one could in theory using the LFOs ... at higher frequency they're not sines anymore I bet, the FM falls apart.

All that said, it will never sound as raw as a single dom1 oscillator. Everything I've heard sounds beautiful, ballsy like the minitaur for example . Different synths with different strengths. One day I'll upgrade the Minibrute for a dom1.

I love my Dom 1, it's a modern classic, one of the best sounding monos I've ever heard, easily in the same league as the vintage ones we all revere. And it's paraphonic and plays great with my modular. No build issues on mine or the several other MFB modules I have. No experience with the A4 but looks interesting.

If you happen to buy Dom1 first and only then sell Brute. Try to plug Dom1 to Brute audio in set Brute Factor ~30%. It's sounding very 70ths to my ears.

A4/AK doesn't have mod matrix AT ALL.
It has set of destinations for lfo and envelopes and that's it. But it's not mod matrix.

Again: what?

2 LFO's with two destinations (they have a simple dedicated envelope)
other LFO's for PWM
and one LFO for vibrato (which has a simple dedicated envelope)

=5 LFOs per sound!

All (3) envelopes have two destination routes.

What Arturia calls: modulation matrix.

10 modulation (performance) knobs with 5 destinations (=50 destinations)
velocity with 5 destinations

Modulation matrix is matrix where rows are set of modulation sources and columns are set of destinations. Definition comes from ARP2500 and EMS synths. DSI P-12, P-2, P-3 have it, MatrixBrute has it as well as many other synths but AK/A4 doesn't have it. AK/A4 has limited set of destinations like say Juno 106 or MiniBrute.
