The snare feels so much closer, but still just lacks a certain punch to it.

This time around, I fully re-routed the kick, snare and their room/oh mics from GGD OKW Architects, and then toms, cymbals, hh from Nu Metal.

I like some of the samples from those packs but they still lack some punch, but layering is they key here after all.

For the plugins, isn't smack attack just a transient designer, or does it have anything special? I have it but just tend to use JST transify or other equivalents when needed.

It is a transient designer, yes. However, when A/B comparing it against the other two I use, something about this one seems to have more oomph... maybe it’s just a placebo effect.

Does it need some sort of low end punch? Any suggestions specifically on the snare?

Current setup is GGD Architects snare with a bunch of processing - Pro Q3, 1176, Decapitator, Smack and Attack (transient), Flatline (clipper), Pro Q3 and some samples from Splice blended in with UVI Drum Replacer.

I would say, maybe reduce the pumping of the OHs and room a bit, the snare is lacking more high end snap than "oomph" to my ear, you could add a white noise sample with a gate. The kick is pretty close, maybe add a Sine wave, low in volume, so that the sub punch is consistent every time and add a bit more air to it, I've noticed by analizing the mixes from zakk that the kicks tend to have quite a lot of high freq, 11 - 20 Khz (not a lot, but more than I would expect) Hope this helps!

Actually, here's the sub I created by analyzing a few Architects songs, you can blend this with the kick and you will have a pretty consistent low end punch.

Indeed, he literally says 6dB at 12kHz on his kick samples, to get some punch, in many interviews.

His kick clicks are all over the 1.2k-12k range, try boosting around 1.2k or stack a sample rich in that frequency.

The kick sample's low end was a bit delayed due to the phase rotation and the extreme EQ, so I reversed the sample, applied Disperser, and reversed it again.
Sometimes I don't know what I'm doing lol

The stack of snare samples was also changed.
The fundamental may be a bit dominant, but it's a good compromise.

It's a multi-velocity TCI I made myself.
I'm constantly updating it, and the current version is 20
It was originally a stack of Pop Pink Drums, Trigger David Bendeth, Perfect Drums, GGD, Drumshotz (Joey Sturgis and Taylor Larson, I think), etc.
By using EQ and all-pass filters, I was able to create the ideal low end, and finally by using match EQ, I think it became as close to the real one as possible.

Match EQ is really powerful for recreating samples, so if you haven't used it, give it a try.
However, EQ can cause unwanted sustain, so you may need to clean it up with a multiband expander or something.

I have adjusted my kick and snare inserts, and the samples. I'm also using the Match EQ idea at the end of my snare chain referencing the snare on the intro of Landmines by Architects.

Yeah! I think, from all of your tests, this is the snare that comes the closest to the sound! The kick still needs some work and I still can't get that punch, this time I tried to get closer to Poppy’s snare.

I noticed on the original Poppy track there's quite a bit more room or gated reverb going on also.

Okay I think I figured out the kick? At least to me it sounds kinda close. This is not a one shot taken from a song or a mutant blend of multiple samples, I'm 80% sure this might be the kick that Zakk actually uses from a sample library. I tested hundreds (thousands?) of kick samples that I have and I haven't found anything close that has the same top end slappy sound as this kick. Figuring out all the processing was very difficult. :(

I did some tests and processing using AI stems to remove the kick from the song and replace it. These are some of the songs that I felt you could hear the kick well and without so much crap blocking the sound.

It doesn't sound exactly the same because it's missing the original masterbus compression and the last bit of glue but it's kinda close. Listening back I think I overdid the top end a bit >:( f***

Also sometimes he uses another kick (poppy,new architects?) so that's another sound.

He still uses the kick sound on newer stuff too. This Sleep Theory song has a really clean section during the verse where you can hear the kick pretty well. I'll try to see if I can match the sound later.

I'd say is the same or a pretty similar "click". The punch kick from the travis barker kit is spot on to the "click" in some tracks, but your kick still does not have the same low end ooomph, so we still need another layer for that, from my pov

As hineni said, you may need to add some EQ or another layer on the low end.

Let's analyze Zakk's kick with MiniMeters...we can see that there's a 30-40hz sub below the 60hz peak.
