Hello. I finally bit the bullet and purchased some bass traps. I purchased two of the 244 traps and I must say that even just two have reduced a big peak in my room. I have read and researched MANY threads with regard to safety and smell and misc stuff regarding health issues concerning the use of bass traps and I am NOT trying to get another thread about that going. Soooo.........

....these traps look very well built and I am sure that there are not any tiny little gremlin fibers trying to kill me AND they really don't smell,but my room does smell like a hardware store(various wood smells and glue smells,etc). So I am wondering,how long did it take other GIK users to have this "air" out? Also,do you have any suggestions on how to try and expedite this "airing out" process?

I live in an apt,so I don't have the luxury of a garage. Also, with sleep included, I spend nearly 18 hrs a day in this little bedroom mix room and I was wondering if anyone else spends this much time with these GIK products and if so, do have any general respitory issues? At the moment, I occasionally will get a sore throat or dry eyes and a slight headache, but I think this is more of a chemical deal than an actual rockwool deal,because these traps really do looked sealed up VERY well!

Okay,to recap:

1) how long to air out?

2) am I spending too much time exposed to these babies? if so, what are some suggestions that could help me around this?

3) has anyone else here(using GIK panels) had a similar issue and it finally cleared up? If so. how long did it take?

I have had these for a couple of weeks and the "smell" is still around and I am hoping to be able to keep these and not have the above mentioned irritations. BTW, the GIK stuff really is nice!

i live in an apt/loft

gik 244 panels sit a few ft from my face
never noticed any smell ...

they are wrapped - you need not worry about any health issues / airborne particles

I've never personally tried the stuff...

but the commercials say a spray bottle of Fabreeze works wonders.

Or incense...or something that 'stinks better' (I think that's called potpourri... ;-)

(...and you're sure its not just the dirty laundry?)

Or, perhaps the best option, if you don't just wan to cover up one smell with another, is to just leave out a large bowl of baking soda. The LARGE packages are available now at Costco and WalMart.

This is a bit of a strange one as I have never had a customer report this. I guess if we made them and shipped them right away there would be a fresh wood smell and so on. If you would try either leaving them out in the open (not the rain but maybe a covered area outside) or as SAC said try some Fabreeze. Do me a favor if you would and send me a email through the GIK sight to keep me updated on things. Like I said I have never heard of this but want to take care of it.

Well, I did remove the panels and took them to a friends house. I noticed that they did not smell at his place...hmmm....however,when I got home my place did have an odor even after airing out for a while.Turns out,that the apt. next to mine had just been repainted and THAT is what I was/am smelling. So, I am gonna go get my panels and bring em back!!!!


Once again, I cannot say enough about the build quality and the effectiveness of these traps. Cant' wait to get more!

I have a number of GIK panels. When you open them up they out-gas just like any other manufactured product or new construction. No big. It goes away.

When I try to think of better smells, only a couple of things come to mind (and one is a freshly opened box of 456).

our guard dog sure does like the shop smell. Fresh wood and all!

Unfortunately, dog smell is not in my top 3.

Found this ancient post and am reaching. I am in exactly the same situation. I have a small bedroom studio, covered the wall with GIK 3 inch panels. The smell is driving me crazy

How you resolve the issue? Did the smell go away? Thanks!
