I don't think it is convoluted at all. It is very simple and elegant implemented. I think most of confusion comes from people getting confused about the difference between "Autosave" and "Auto Backup", because they assume it works a specific way without reading up first how mechanisms actually work.
Think about it
Autosave
This is one of the best features in LPX, period. A real, transparent, low footprint Autosave. You don't have to do anything. You don't even have to know about it. Only in the bad case of a crash when you reopen a Project will you be confronted with a Dialog Window that offers you "to save your life".
Auto Backup
Pretty much the same system as in L9. You save your Project and Logic keeps the previous versions as backup (just inside the Package File instead of a separate file). How many backups, you tell it, up to 100. You can load any of those by choosing them in the Revert To submenu. How cool (simple) is that?
Save Project As
You still have the option as before, if you prefer that workflow.
Alternatives
Again, this is just a new option, to implement into your workflow. You don't have to use it.
Advantages
All those implementation provides you with the option to fix something in the case of a disaster, which was not possible in L9.
