Snare drum recording trick
Hi,
I recently discovered something that really helped me while mixing natural drums. Maybe it’s common stuff I‘ve never heard of before. In that case: sorry. However I wanted to share it with you.
For the recording, I miced the OH with a spaced pair. However the drummer was used to a Glyn Johns setup while playing. So I set it up for him. Later, while mixing, I was wondering what I could do with the additional mics of the GJ. So I tried the following: I sidechained the gate of the top snare close mic to the Glyn Johns mic that is placed high above the snare. By that, I get the full rich, natural sound of the snare and the gate prevents the other stuff to interfere as it’s triggered by the close mic. It really enhances the close mics and works quite independently from the overheads. In addition, I aligned the audio track to the close mic to get even more punch.
