As many of you folks know, I've been using M160s for drum overheads for decades, so you know where I stand with regard to these killer mics.

I've noticed that many of you are now using or considering using these wonderful mics for your drum capture.

How many of you started using M160s post the start of the Remote Possibilities forum, (or Gearslutz for that matter) and of course how many used them pre this forum?

I remember when very few were even interested is using these mics for drum OHs.
I am curious why it has become so popular as of late.

I've been using them for a couple of years now, in conjunction with a 77DX in the Glynn Johns configuration. Sounds really big and natural (with the right drummer, of course). I came to the conclusion to try them on my own, but it was gratifying to see others coming to the same conclusions...

I love them on guitars but when I A/B them against my go to overheads RODE NT1 I always end up using the Rode.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

A few years ago, I started out with a pair of KM 184s for OHs, not bad but they sounded too smeary and glassy to my ears. I also had a pair of KM 84s later but they also didn't really knock me out on drums (or anything else for that matter, though they were always 'good')

I'm sure that Gearslutz was a reason for me to get a pair of M160s but even more so the fact that engineers like Eddie Kramer and Andy Johsn kept mentioning these mics.

I love the on OHs and distorted guitar cabs and practically always put them through a Chandler TG-2.

I've found them more useful through API's as stereo room mics as they really capture the crispness of a kit in a good room.

I tend to prefer either SE z5600a's, AKG 414 ULS's or Coles 4038s for OH

I bought an M160/M130 combo a few years ago after reading about them here and elsewhere. I've since bought another M160.

I was looking into adding more ribbons to my mic locker about six months ago and I spent a lot of time reading here (on all the GS forums) about what people liked and didn't. At the time it seemed like I found several posts saying the M 160s were good for drum overs, and more importantly I'm not sure I found a single negative post about the mics in general. I'm sure there are some out there that I missed, but it seemed like the Beyers have a much higher satisfaction percentage than a lot of stuff.

Josephson C 42s were my main over head pair for drums before the beyers. Don't get me wrong, I like the C 42s as mid-range SDCs go, but I think they are overly bright around 4-6kHz IMHO and God help you if you have a drummer that is heavy on the cymbals . I had this college band come in once and the drummer had this little 6 inch "color" cymbal that he loved to hit at what he thought were artistic moments in each tune (about every other bar). The Josephson's grabbed that sound like a dog with a bone--sometimes, late at night I still hear it.....

The Beyers are much smoother, take EQ much better, and are more forgiving of a bad room I think. I got a great deal from Sweetwater--two for about 1100.00--and that's the anniversary edition with the wood boxes and shock mounts.

The more ribbons I get, the less often my SDCs ever see the light of day.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong.
I think it's more about the positioning.
I bet your RODE mics sound better in the placement you're using.

I actually don't even remember where I heard about them first. I know I love my particular 77DX that I got from Media Sound on just about everything and decided to get some M160s and M130s a couple of years ago to try them on various things. They seemed like a really natural choice for the Glynn Johns drum thing...

Damn. Saw this thread one day too late. I was tracking today and have access to a pair...I would have tried them. It never occured to me to use them for OH's.
Do you have any pic/clips of them in this app. Steve? How do you like to position them, and for what styles of music?

I've used them for all sorts of music styles from Jazz to pop to R&B to hard rock and beyond.

I always place them straight down over the kit.
Each mic is focused in between drums and cymbals equally.
